  • This was my first hog, a large boar. I was unaware that we had them on the property I was hunting until my game camera told me otherwise. I was hunting from a stand overlooking a thicket. By the time I saw him and could get my Marlin 30/30 on him, he was at 30 yards. I squeezed the trigger and he never acknowledged that he had been hit. He took off running through the thicket quickly disapperaring out of sight but could still be heard in the leaves moving around. It sounded like he had just ran about 40 yards and stopped. I gave him 30 minutes but was still cautious about getting down. I had to tie my action up to lower my weapon and I didnt want to be on the ground playing peek-a-boo with a hog while I was untying my Marlin. I called my Grandpa and waited on him to show up so we could go track him together. At first we found no blood, then we found a little. I decided to walk in the direction I had last heard him. I went about 30 yards and there he was! My 30/30 hadn't even made a pass through at 30 yards! We found the bullet lodged in the tough hide on the other side!

Thanks NCbow. Since that was my first hog, I wasn't sure what to expect. Went from thinking I had the one on my property to having around 20. Still got my game cameras up and fixing to start trapping them. There a lot of fun to still hunt like deer but I'm looking for something a little bit more effective on population control. Shooting at a heard only seems to educate them and push them on to surrounding property that nobody can hunt. Then when they come back through there numbers seemed to have doubled.

I'm not sure if I'll do anything with the head yet or not Gobblin. A skull mount would look cool. No I didn't have an extra cartridge taped on. It was dark by the time I got down and had a light attached to the barrel. Of course Duct Tape worked great for the task!

We've never had them until about 2 yrs ago. Thats when I captured my first picture of one. I figured that it had to be a tame pig that had escaped and that there couldn't possibly be another out there for them to raise. I was wrong!

I was hanging in a tree overlooking a thicket. He was 30 yards away when I pulled the trigger on my Marlin 30/30. He never fell or even acknowledged that he had been hit. He just ran out of sight through the thicket but I could still hear him in the leaves. It sounded like he hadn't ran 40 yards when the forest grew quiet. I gave him 30 minutes which was all that I could stand. I got down and looked for blood but only found a little. I decided to press on a little further in the direction that I had heard him run in. I went about 40 yards and there he was! I'm use to hunting whitetail and not thinking much about running into one thats wounded after the shot. This was the first time I was actually on edge. I've heard so many stories from people about how aggressive they can be.

Thanks Diane. I'll be honest, I was about scared to climb out of my tree afterwards.
