  • Katie Maharrey kills her first deer on South Carolina Youth Day Hunt (Jan. 7 2012) at Ash Hill/Pond Bluff while hunting with her father. It was a very active morning with wildlife moving all around us. We were getting to the end of our hunt with the smell of the Alpine breakfast on the tip of our nose. We decided to sit to 9:00am and at 8:50 this awesome buck tried to slip undetected through a narrow strip of trees between two food plots. Katie got her gun on a fire-line that paralleled the strip of woods and waited for the chance that the buck would choose that route. At 80 yards the awesome 180lb, 8 pt stepped into the opening. When the deer stopped Katie squeezed the trigger making a perfect neck shot. Rumor has it that Katie and I could be herd across the lake into Summerton after she pulled the trigger and the deer fell. Katie's Uncle Pat and Fred Connor were there quickly to help Katie and I load and clean deer. Thank you to the Connors and Fred for their involvement in YOUTH HUNTS and to Uncle Pat for guiding Katie on where to sit that morning.
