  • maybe a 4 or 5 inch beard, around 1 inch spurs. A deep, full roll gobble and a full tail fan. in range for 6 minutes, and maybe 8 yards at one point. would you have taken him? keep in mind its about midway through the season, with only one tag left.

    May 12, 2013 at 10:43pm

took this fine longbeard around 10;30 on monday morning. he was scratching around in a planted corn field with a jake. I crawled into position about 5-10 yards from the field edge, set up camera tripod and made a few soft yelps. he gobbled and slowly began feeding my way. 15 minutes later their right on the field edge in front of me. the Jake even hops the ditch and comes over looking for me. he gives up and rejoins the gobbler. I tried to wait for an unobstructed camera view before taking the shot but they started moving off hard right and it was a now or never situation. It was a 10 or 15 yard shot through some twigs with 3'' #5 federal TT's. I didn't realize he had 3 beards until I was taking pics back at the house.

A comment titled: thanks for the feedback in response to a report titled: would you have shot this bird?

thanks everyone. It is private land with light to no pressure on the weekdays and heavy on Saturdays. I was lucky enough to be able to hunt just about everday of the season from sunrise until 1 or 2, until I tagged out, so I had no problem giving this bird a free pass. I missed a good one this year. it was the same situation, only 1 tag left so I made the mistake of waiting for the perfect footage and he never cleared the brush. when he turned around and started walking off I took a good look at him with the binocs and seen he had some daggers so I tried him at about 40yards. it looked good on camera but I don't know what happened. I hated it but hey it happens.

A comment titled: Need spurswader asap in response to a report titled: Favorate calls

Gt, your comment has convinced me I want. . . NO. . I need a spurswader. Without one, I won't stand a chance of being successful. My address is 538 april fools drive. Seriously though, I doubt I would add your call to my lineup if it was given to me. You say China TOOK your job of 20 years lol. That is a joke. You seem to know it all GT.... And D, I don't even read your comments anymore. You are clearly biased toward the calls, and you always copy and paste some plain jane response to someones kill they posted.

Thanks DCB I'm doing well and I hope you are to. Yes I'm going to try with the bow but it wouldn't disappoint me at all to give one a bb breakfast lol. Good luck to you also.

A comment titled: Calls in response to a report titled: Favorate calls

I mostly use H.S. products. My lineup includes: HS lil deuce glass, HS lil deuce slate, HS derringer glass, HS closer box call, and many HS mouth calls (sm double d, derringer, deep cut, lil strut). I just rinse my mouth calls thoroughly with water and have not had a problem getting more than one season out of them (have heard of ppl getting 5+ years out of them). It obviously doesn't take a custom call to call in turkeys, I say get what you can afford and practice. Price wise, I'll take my small arsenal of mass produced calls any day of the week over one custom call.

That looks really good scoutfish! I have the same gun and will be using it this spring since my semi auto charles daly took a crap. I have some cheaper gun and bow wrap stuff that i'm considering putting on my gun, but will probably end up putting it on my camera tripod since it needs it bad also. How long can you leave that stuff on your gun? If it gets wet, do you have to remove it and clean it?

A comment titled: Why? in response to a report titled: Sunday Hunting

I'm not crazy about the idea of allowing hunting with firearms on Sunday. I am the only bowhunter in the club I'm in and everyone else runs dogs. The competetion (if you could even call it competetion- more like domination lol) is fierce enough. I don't want to sound like I'm complaining but I don't think it's right. People who run dogs around here have a self proclaimed right of way and show no respect for the still hunter, often showing it by cutting up on the roads near your truck, talking junk on the radio or whatever. I'd personally hate to see the otherwise quiet, peaceful sundays in the woods turn into a day at the monster jam/ random shootout fest lol (just like saturdays). Next they'll probably want to do away with bowseason and make it all rifle. If gun hunting on Sunday is passed, my main focus will be tagging out (or mostly) during bowseason. Just my .02

A comment titled: Hunting in Durham in response to a report titled: In the City or not

Justin you can go to the city of Durham's website http://durhamnc.gov/Pages/Home.aspx and scroll over 'city services' and then click 'city code of ordinances'. From there you can type hunting in the search bar and it will bring up the info you need. From what I can tell, hunting is not allowed in the city limits. Sec. 6-3. - Shooting or poisoning wild game or squirrels.

It shall be unlawful for any person to shoot any wild game or any squirrel, whether wild or tame, with any gun, firearm or bow and arrow or willfully poison any wild game or squirrel.

I've been trying to get permission to bow hunt a small community around here with similar ordinances, but have had no luck. I've heard that they will be changing the ordinance around here to allow some bowhunting, but we'll see. You could possibly contact someone from the city and see if the ordinances will soon be changed or if exceptions could be made for archery hunting certain areas, etc,. On that same website, move the cursor across 'about durham' and then click 'Boards, Committees and Commissions'.
From there click 'Recreation Advisory Commission' and then you can email Lynda Merritt. Could be a long shot, but you never know until you try.

A comment titled: bows in response to a report titled: Crossbows

Chevyman I shoot a 2009 Parker Wildfire XP @ 70lbs. and have had no desire to upgrade. For the money, I can't imagine having a better bow. I would dust it off, wax the string, and spend some time on the range. I might upgrade the sights on mine this year, but the one that came with it has been sufficient. I also have a 2009 Parker Buckhunter XP @ 60lbs. that I bought hardly used as a backup bow. It's a good bow as well even though I haven't hunted with it.

A comment titled: bearded hens in response to a report titled: 'Male or bearded turkey...'

I would have to pass. Like GT said, the hen could have a nest somewhere. Bearded hens are not that uncommon where I live(newbern). A buddy of mine got a trail cam picture of a double bearded hen before the season started last year. Her beards were fairly thick and long also. The guy is not a user of the sportsman so I will get a pic from him this evening and post it. I have on rare occasions, seen white hens. I would probably take one of them if it were bearded.

I am prolly going to go with the 3' #5 nitro turkeys out of my mossberg 500. I plan to get a undertaker choke tube and see what it will do with that combo. You can get thermacells all day long at walmart for about $20 + tax. Good luck.

A comment titled: Don't do it in response to a report titled: Charles Daly shotguns

I'd stay away from charles daly guns. Charles Daly aka (KBI) is out of business and there guns are crap imo. I have had a charles daly field 3' semi auto for about 6 years and thought it was a decent, dependable shotgun until a few weeks ago when I was out crow hunting. The bolt handle sheared off while I was shooting, after about a half box of shells. If you google 'charles daly broken' you will see that it is a common issue. You can supposedly order the peices to fix it from numrich, but it would likely happen again and again.

A comment titled: nothing in response to a report titled: What do you Guys think of this idea??? Good Christmas Gift?

Man I didn't see a single deer. I was hunting in a small block of woods in my neighborhood where I'm normally either wrapped up with deer or nothing. A group of kids came through the area about an hour before dark, so that was probably it. About every other time I have hunted this spot, either dogs will come through or in this case, people, and mess it up. There are alot of deer in there though, just not many nice bucks I reckon. I've kept corn in there the last 3 weeks and the deer are hittin it hard. Many night photos with as many as six deer at once. The day photos are picking up the last few days. I'm one piece closer to finishing the puzzle. Tomorrow is a new day and I'm going somewhere different.
