So I got my deer mount back. What do you guys think?
Does anybody have any suggestions of the best place to go on a hog hunt? I really want to go and surprise my husband. Please fill me up with suggestions!
This guy is a regular. He's always out there. I've seen him more times than I can count.
This time a small buck and doe go at it!
Two bucks going at it!
This is what was coming in the week before opening bow season. The big eight in the back is the one I shot on Friday Sept.30th.
Here's my 9 pointer that I shot on September 17, 2011. He still had a little bit of velvet on him. These two bucks tagged me out but I am still looking forward to taking out some does for the rest of the season. Good luck to the rest of you guys! I look forward to seeing what else everyone else gets and posts on here.
Here's the story on this guy:
I went out early that morning to my stand. It was probably 5:45 am when I got out there. I figured I would go out when it was dark that way if I jumped any they wouldn't know what it was out in the woods. The trail camera we've been using was showing deer come into our hunting spot at 1:00 am and not leaving until 9:00 am. So it made it difficult to get in without getting busted by them. Anyway I ended up passing on several small eights and a couple of does around lunch time. The deer activity that day was crazy. They were constantly in and out and all around me. The action finally calmed down around 12pm. I came down from the stand had lunch and came back out around 2:00 pm. Within 30 minutes of getting into my stand here come the deer again. This guys finally decides to come in around 5:00pm. He never really gives me an angle to pull off a clean shot. He was quartering to me when I shot him. Probably not the best decision to take a shot at this angle but I felt like I could pull it off. He was around 33 yards when I finally shot him with my crossbow.
This is my third season deer hunting and my first big buck. After having a dry season last year, this was a pleasant surprise! I shot him with my crossbow at about 44 yards at my father-in-laws property.
I couldn't figure out how to comment back on this so I edited my original post. Here's my play by play as requested:
Here's a little bit of history behind this buck. I've been watching him since Sept 5 on the trail cam. Opening weekend I had him come out on me around 5:00 in the evening. Unfortunately, he busted me and took off. The following weekend I shot a 9 pointer. Nice deer, but not nearly as big as this one. I took a weekend off and let my husband have a shot at him. He never saw him. Trail camera later showed that he hadn't been in our hunting spot for about a week and a half. I was concerned that maybe someone else in the area may have already taken him. We went out Wednesday of this week put out some corn on the ground and checked the camera again. There was only one night time picture of him. I was stoked! So I got off work early on Friday and went out to my stand around 3:00 in the afternoon. I had a small 8 and a doe come out. I sat and watched them for a little while. Right before 7:00 I had 3 bucks come out on me--a big 6, a nice 8 and this one. They chased each other around for a little while. The 8 and the 6 started sparring which was cool to witness. Next thing I knew, the Big 6 came in with the 8 behind him. Two seconds later this buck wandered in. I had already ranged the area and marked certain trees off in my head for the range. He turned broad side. I put my crosshairs on him with the crossbow and pulled the trigger. He ran off and I heard him fall not too far from where I shot him. I wasn't exactly sure about the placement of the shot so I climbed down and checked my arrow. I backed out and went to the house and waited for my husband to get to my father-in-laws house. We walked back out around 8:00 pm to track him. I found the blood trail and tracked him down to where he was on the ground. He had run off about 30 some yards from where I shot him at. That was by far the best hunt I've ever had!
