This big male came looking a few minutes after I was doing some doe bleating, turned out to be a bad new year for him
Finally got some decent pics of several deer and various sizes, looking forward to September 7th. Good luck everyone
Well it's been a tough season for me this year, I have seen very few deer and no shooter bucks, decided to take my 6 year old niece out with me yesterday evening. I was very impressed she was able to sit there with me in a blind for 2.5 hours. Every couple minutes she asked when the deer were gonna come out into the crp field, and I said hopefully soon, well last 20 minutes of light to Doe stepped out at about 100 yards and took the bigger if the two, my sister who is not to big on hunting was shocked when I sent her a picture of our harvest, I thinky niece will always remember this evening and her first hunting experience.
So I started a new construction project for my company. I work for an engineering firm as a special inspector. Any way this job is for progress energy in Roxboro nc, witch I think is person county. It's near the huge steam plant near a beautiful lake, and I'm pretty sure most of there property is fenced in but I saw wildlife placards on the tree line saying archery only hunting area. At 9 am I spotted a large bodied deer about 200 yards in the middle of the power lines. He was broadside and I noticed he had antlers but could tell how big until he turned away and his rack no lie was atleast 20 inch spread. I just watch him slowly browse and eat while he paid no attention to me standing there drewling and saying to myself why I can't see a buck like this when I'm actually hunting. So for any bow hunters in that area, the road is called Roxboro plant road. Later I took a walk and found some nice tree rubs. But as my luck has been this year I went into the woods when I got home and saw nothing but a couple squirrels.
So i have been sitting here for about an hour thinking of a diiferent wat to enter the woods in the morning. I have had very very little sightings of deer so far this season. Its absolutely frustrating me. I have located tree rub trails about 60 yards long, have edges of field torn up under low hanging branches, so the deer are there, but just are not moving during daylight which makes me scratch my head and wonder why. I mean the temperatures have been cooling down significantly at night, the soy been fields are the best they have looked in 4 years, no hunting pressure at all, and yet i cant get deer to move by me during morning or evening hours. So i have decided since tomorrow we can carry rifles (eastern counties) im gonna start entering the woods right at sunrise and slowly do some walking and stalking with my ruger mkII 7mm-08. I have had a majority of all my deer, including my biggest buck hunting this way when growing up in western NY. I saw a nice 6 point buck today while driving home on I-540 between six forks and falls of nuese exits, which tells me that the bucks in this area are starting t get a little bit more frisky. So fellow hunters let me know what yall think about this plan, along with the idea that rut might be here before we know it. Good luck this weekend and Please hunt safe, and introduce a kid to the wild outdoors if you have the chance to. Denny J,
Just wanted to say congratulations on the nice deer harvested with bow this year, also wanted to with the best of luck to all fellow outdoorsman and woman who will be entering the woods in the break of dawn tomorrow morning with our mizzleloaders. Well in eastern NC anyway. I know I'll be in the tree acting like a kid at Christmas. Good luck and hunt safe. Denny J.
Looks like somebody better fx there fence. lol
quality time with my son
Getting my son exposed to the outdoors everytime i can. Obviously he is still to young to go into the woods during open season but a little bit of pond fishing keeps him curious.
My son Hayden and I doin some pond fishing at a community pond in Wake Forest. He was all about grabbing the bass.
Glad to see most of you all are seeing some nice eary season bucks. Unfortunatly the area i have been hunting for past 3 years just got logged. They took all large mature oak trees, im hoping the wildlofe slowly return back into area, i have had corn and all sorts of goodies out for the deer, usually its gone in 4 days, but looks like nothin has even looked at except for crows. Hope everyone has a great season
Just wanted to say congrates to everyone who had success this season, and especially to those who harvested thier first wild turkey. Now you will be counting the days until next season. Happy huntil yall
soft purrs answered by loud gobbles!!! Well decided to go on a late morning hunt since work was slow, plus it was nice a cool outside. Walked around for about an hour, stopping every couple hundred yards to cluck. Was about to head back when i saw a hen take off running about 100 yrds away in a field. So that got me a little bit exited. I decided to circle around and try some calling hoping that there might be more. I was in a piece of hardwoods with large fields on each side. I clucked and though i might of heard a gobble but wasnt sure. So i walked about another 100 yards and BAM, I did hear a gobble and it was getting close. I quickly got settled and slowly purred and the tom started getting as exited as me. By this time my heart was pumping, knees shaking and eyes wide open. Bad thing was i was in a small draw below the field, and i couldnt see, and he wasnt going to enter the woods. I slowly low crawed to where i could pop my head over the hill enough to see the field. There he was full strutt on an old dirt path. I got ready, I purred again, he lifted his head, gobbled, and at 18 yrds with my bennelli nova with 3 1/2 # 5's closed the deal. What an awsome day.

So my story starts out by me sitting on the ground against a pine tree at the back corner of a bean field on private property i can hunt in Kittrel NC. About 5 oclock a shooter buck steps out at the other end, bout 75 yard, but not completely out of the thick wooded area where you cant even see 15 feet. I had my 7mm-08, place the scope behind the shoulder and let the 140 grain winchester bullet fly. The buck drops in his tracks and im glad because i knew if he went back into wooded area i would never find him at night fall. So i calmed myself down, i could see him lifting his head and kicking so i didnt want to go over yet and possibly jump him. I called the wife to tell her that i just shot the best buck of the year. With the phone to my ear and my gun against the tree the deer jumped up and ran after 15 minuts of it laying there. My jaw dropped as i watched him jump back into the hilatios wooded area and my heart dropped. I went from an extreme high to an extreme low in a matter of seconds. I looked for blood where he ran in the field and saw nothing, but had heavy tracks where he barreled back into the woods. I decided not to push it and went home. I returned ealy this moring with a friend and met the land owner. we found a great amount of blood where he was laying before he took off and ran. Nice dark red blood everywhere. We entered where he entered, i found 1 spot of blood about the sixe of a quarter about 100 yards from where he was before he took off. Needless to say that was all we could find, not helping this area was so thick with briar bushes, buck brush and small trees. We never found him. But did find 20 or more big buck rubs. Does anyone know what might have happened? Im gonna go back monday evening and try again.
I too found someone up to know good, its obviously a camera so why stick you nose in it.
Hey guys and girls, i just picked up a ruger m77 7mm-08 compact. Sweet little gun and cant wait to shoot it. Does anyone have any expience with this caliber? What is a good grain bullet to use. thanks
So i went in the woods late this morning to find a new place for one of my stands. I got everything situated, nuce scrapes, rubs, water, thick cover ect. I had a great feeling for this evening. So went and got groceries and a little hand saw to cut some branches to be able to get higher in the tree. So now its about 3:15 and im about 8 feet in the tree, trimming a branch, gun slung behind me. I hear some leaves crunching, i turn my head and 25 yrs away a awsome mature 8 to 10 point was just passing by. Try to hurry to get my gun and turning around in the climber, by the time i got the scope up he was outta sight in this brush. If only i was situated 10 minuts earlier. this is gonna give me nightmares. lol
He may not be the biggest buck i have ever shot, but is by far the goofiest deer i have ever shot. I actually have him on cam, and my neighbor and i agreed that he needed to be taken out if we get the chance. At 3:56pm this buck cam running in after a few grunts. At 35 to 40 yards i realized he was the goofy buck we caught on cam. So the saftey clicked off on the ruger .308 and well the rest is history. But regardless of his size it was a great afternoon and couldnt be happier. Happy hunting
got a few pics of this guy, i wonder if he has been around or just passing through, finally decided to put my cam out after only seeing plenty of doe and young bucks
