The wilmington area surf is plentiful in Speckled trout. Last night i caught around 60. Most were in the 14-16' range but got 7 around 20' . Most trout fell for smoke colored curlytails, but also red and white mirrolure did well. Nice full moon probaly had somethin g to do with it!!
Fished the south end of Wrightsville beach last night. Started out by the pier but ended up a mile or so down the beach. Caught trout in almost every slough i threw into. Lots of smaller ones, but the average size was 18' and my biggest went 20' . I did have a gator hooked but pulled the hooks!!! I have never felt head shakes that hard! I got most trout on a red head white body mirrolure, but also a few on smoke colored grubs. Beautiful night on the beach though. Bright moon, calm seas , clear water, and lots of trout!
Well the surf around Wilmington has been pretty reliable for speckled trout. Seems everytime we go we ve been gettin into them. Seems best at falling tides, and then 2 hrs after low just starting to come back in. Most of my fish have been biting redhead jigs, and green curlytail grubs. Sometimes we'll get into schools of small spike trout, but this fall has given up some good ones to. My biggest went 22'. Well good luckeveryone. Water temps still 63 and trout should be here through Christmas!
Fished off C.B. pier yesterday. Had just about non stop action with the blues. Some were in the 3-4 lbs range. Also got a couple nice spanish around 15-16' range. Seen a few big chopper blues around 10 12 lbs. Seen 2 kings caught pushin 20lbs. I used gotcha plugs for my fish, any color was working, but i perfered the pink because the water wasent the clearest, so i had to give them something they could see. Diamonds jigs were also producing. I got blisters from plugging so hard! LOL! Great day on the Pier!
The blues are def. in. You can catch all you want on gotcha plugs. They were so thick i got two on one plug! I probaly fished 4 hrs and caught over 50. Also seen the first spanish of the yr. He was about 14'. Grear day on the water!
I went and tried the surf yesterday, and was surprised by how the fishing improved in just a weeks time. I was using fresh shrimp, casting right behind the shorebreak and it didnt take long for my first bite. I got a bluefish and a spot on first cast. After that i caught another blue, then a nice sea mullet. I was pretty happy already and then this nice black drum hit. After catching him i decided one last cast, and i got a small flounder. I fished 2 hrs, and had a blast. Hopefully this is a sighn of a good season ahead of us!
went and tried the surf this past saturday. Well nothing too exciting yet, but looking hopeful! I managed to catch 6 puffers, 5 skates. But now to the hopeful part. I got a report from a fishing buddy that blues were in the surf. I believe it seeing that i spotted baitfish already right up on the beach! Birds were working them, but i couldnt get a bite on plugs. But with the higher temps we re gonna have this next weekend, should push fish our way!
Caught 7 bass today in about 2 Hrs fishing! Caught em all on 5'' finesse worm, texas rigged. One was about 3.5 lbs. Seems like they re movin up, all were caught in about 3 - 4 feet of water.
I did catch three this past weekend. Got two on a 1/4 oz rattle trap. And i caught one on a husky jerk. Im new to using jerkbaits, its fun once you get the cadence down!
Around what month do bass generally spawn in nc? I was fishing this past weekend, and seen a lot of what i believed were male bass real shallow. Were they just making the bedds? Even caught a few, Yeah!!!
Thats true on most beaches, but here on Carolina beach, or the whole pleasure island, there structure that most beaches dont have. We have cochina rocks in the surf, pipelines that hold fish, even some civil war wrecks! Within casting distance from shore. These spots usually hold fish!
Heres a catch from late sept. last yr. I was using live finger mullet on a fishfinder rig. Caught a bunch of blues this size and man did they rock them rods! Then a school of these grey trout moved in. Caught in one of my holes on Carolina beach, ( hint : behind a set of condos!)
Well i finally got a couple bass. I don't know if it was the warmer temps but the bass were pretty active. I used a 1/4 oz. rattle trap, crome with blue back. At first i was slow rolling it, and couldnt get a bite. So just changing it up i started rip it and Bam! got one about 2 lbs, then as i was bringing it out of the water a bass came clear out of the grass to grab it. I couldnt believe they could be that active in winter! Had a ball in my lil pond behind my apartment complex!
I got this doormat summer of 01. Got him from shore at new river inlet. I caught 7 in 2 hrs, this was the last one i caught, and after him I left them biting to weigh em. 33in long 11lbs. He hit a 6in finger mullet. I didnt know flounder could fight as hard as he did. He or she was only 5 ft off the shore but it was a steep drop were i was fishing. Almost took the rod out of the sandspike!
I caught this 17in flounder and 21in trout off C.B. surf. Also caught at night, but got em on 808 mirrorlure. It was about the 2nd week of dec.
Well I know the surf is quiet, except for the schools of frigid reds, but i sure miss the specks. I'm hoping that this warmer weather this weekend will intice something to bite in the surf. The last good day i had was the first week of dec. Wore the trout out in the surf off Carolina Beach! Now all i can have fun with is the dogfish and skates, seeing that I'm a shore fisherman. But the conditions are prime for surf reds this weekend, so get out there and FISH!!!
