My buddy just started hunting this year. We have hunted ever week since bow season came in and he had no luck. Sometimes it had to do with just being in the wrong place at the wrong time and sometimes there were human factors that screwed him up. Today was not that day. We went out to the Butner-Falls Lake Gamelands this morning and I set him up on this oak ridge and I set off toward the back of the property to look over the water and hopefully see some ducks haha. Well we had been there for maybe an hour when i got a call on the radio that was all sorts of garbled but I could have sworn he said brown down. So I asked him to say again and again the transmition was garbled but I could have sworn he said brown down. I grabed my pack and gun and set off towards where he was when I got a that said BROWN DOWN!!! I was extatic. I quickly made my way to the oak ridge he was on and hollard for him and asked if it was dead. He said hell yea hes right here. I said he and Jeff responded with a Yea he I told you my first deer would be a buck. After we took some pictures we skinned and dressed the deer and got the cape to the takidermist. I think I may have been more excited than he was. After three months of long hours and not realeasing an arrow or pulling the trigger his patients paied off. It has been a long but exciting journey and I am glad I got to share it with him. Hopefully he will have more chances at some great deer. Good luck the rest of the season and God bless.

I finally got the big boy home today. Drap Harrell from Stoney Creek Taxidermy does awsome work.

Here is one of the duplication set of horns we had made. Next week hell be back at the taxidermist to get mounted and then March 4th the Dixie Deer Classic. I cant wait to see all you guys there.

I finall got my Buck offically scored. He went 182 2/8 inches with 5 6/8 inches of deductions. That should put him number 13 all time nontypical for NC.

Looks like he couldn’t decide whether he wanted to be a whitetail or a muley. He is really cool looking though and I think he was injured and that’s how they grew.

A comment titled: Blinds in response to a report titled: blinds

I have hunted from blinds before and I think the key is to have them in a spot for a week or so before you hunt it and brush it in a little bit to make it look more natural. And to get the deer in there you can put a salt lick or corn or my new favorite c’mere deer. The key is to having an established site that the deer are used to and aren’t skittish about coming to. Good luck

A comment titled: Score in response to a report titled: What score

In the top picture I think that the buck on the left up close to the camera will score somewhere between 110 and 120 and the further one with score in the mid 130s to low 140 depending on how symmetrical he is. Its hard to tell with the distance from the camera. The bottom picture the two bucks on the right will probably be in the 100 to 115 inch range and the bigger buck I think will be in the 140s somewhere. Those two big bucks are a beauty I hope you can connect with them. Good luck.

A comment titled: Creek in response to a report titled: Trail Cam

Creek I can’t tell ya how good he looks on the wall. I’ll have to find my pics of him and post them. You are right about it not always being about the rack. You can tell he’s got a big ole gut and his back is dipped which indicates he’s over 3 but I still don’t think he’s over five and a half. His face is still longish and he’s got such a tiny neck for such a big bodied deer but that could just be the way it’s turned. I’m no biologist but I think he’s only 4.5 which for NC is old but I think this ole boy has been feeding well this summer. He’s a beautiful deer and I think hed make a nice mount to go in anyone’s hunting cabin or living room.

A comment titled: Big Deer in response to a report titled: Trail Cam

Mornin Fellas I believe there is a question that needs to be answered before you can start slinging out ages for this deer like where is he. If this is a NC deer Id agree with Viper about him bein 5.5 to 6 years old just from the size but if hes a deer from Kansas, Illinois, New York those dern things look like moose compared to our deer. I personally don’t think that this buck is over 4.5-5 years old. Bow season kicks off in a week and I know I cant wait to get to the woods to try and connect with a nice deer like that. Good luck Gents and have a blessed day.
