North Carolina Deer Hunting
For the past couple of weeks I have been in the Carolina's working with our circulation field managers for the NC & SC Sportsman Magazines. I had the opportunity to make a couple of hunts in NC on some property leased by Bruce (our NC Sportsman manager) & their family. We couldn't have hit it any better in that area as the deer were in peak rut. We saw alot of deer including several good bucks chasing does. I was extremely fortunite to be able to harvest 2 nice bucks. Both deer were chasing does. Everybody saw alot of deer and had opportunities to take deer. Thanks Bruce for the hospitallity and the great hunt!
On the post I posted of my daughters first deer, someone asked how I hunted on Sunday. The hunt was in Mississippi where deer hunting is allowed on Sundays. I also hunt LA and Kentucky where Sunday hunting is allowed. I have made several hunts in NC. Not sure what the reasons are not allowing Sunday hunting, but most normal people have to work all week and can only hunt on the weekend. I don't see why Sunday's are off limits to hunting!! You can fish on Sundays and do other recreational sports, why not hunting? I would think if enough hunters call their senators and representatives, this could be changed. For the ones that don't want to hunt on Sundays, that is your option. But anyone who wants to hunt on Sundays should have that option. Until sportsman stand up and stick together, nothing will change. Until it changes, LA., Miss., and Kentucky have great hunting opportunities(including Sundays). Give it a try, maybe when officials see the dollars they are loosiing to other states, it might open their minds to allowing sundays hunts. With that said, NC does have some great hunting opportunities.
Just my thoughts!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!
Allison's first deer
First, I want to wish all a Safe &amp;amp;amp;amp; Happy Holiday Season.
This past weekend, I was able to take my daughter(Allison) deer hunting in Mississippi. Saturday, the weather wasn't, favorable with temperatures in the upper 70's. We did see 2 spikes on the morning hunt and nothing on the evening hunt. Slow start to say the least. A big arctic front moved through Saturday night and dropped the temps. to the upper 30's with 20-30 mph winds. A couple of the guys hunting had seen a couple of deer from a ground blind Saturday afternoon, so we decided to hunt it Sunday morning. After a 20 minute walk, we got in the blind and set up for the hunt. At daylight a monster 10 pt. stepped out at about 60 yards, but before Allison could get a shot off, it spooked and was gone. Allison asked me to try using my deer calls(grunt &amp;amp;amp;amp; Lil can). I made a couple of bleats with the can and then grunted aggressively. Within 2 minutes I heard a deer running towards us. I hurried and set Allison up for a shot. The deer came in from behind us and passed within 10 yards of us. We sat motionless until it passed. Then the deer stepped out onto the trail we had been watching. Broadside at 30yds. Allision already had the rifle setup and placed the cross on the front shoulder. I told her to squeeze the trigger. She did and put a perfect shot on the deer. After waiting 15 minutes, we went to see what see had. She had harvested a pretty 9 pointer. Not a record book deer by no means, but a true trophy in my book. To be able to get away for the weekend hunting with your daughter, see 4 bucks, to have her almost get a shot on a monster 10pt. and then she was able to harvest a 9 pointer as her first deer. What more could a father ask for? Attached are a couple of pictures of Allisons deer.
Happy Holidays to all!
