  • So I have read that we are having a youth turkey season this year. I am unclear if this is only on private land or does this include all lands ( state and fed ) that have a season. IE - Caswell County Game Lands. Can someone please clarify.

I made a lamp out of a glass block and painted Brownings Buckmark on it. I entered it into Browning's Show us Your Buckmark contest. I need you votes guys. With three young boys winning a couple of firearms would surely lighten the burden of purchasing firearms. Go to the link and vote ( VOTE OFTEN ) http://www.browning.com/buckmark/item.asp?id=4465

Well I finally took a deer with the bow. decided to take out one of the older bucks that just didn't have a rack worth braging about. these scrub bucks have been eating up everything in the woods. at twenty yards and quartering away, I let the stick fly and heard the famous 'thwack'. I saw the arrow make good contact but a little high and back. the deer dropped his head and his belly hit the ground all the while breaking the sound barier as he left. I waited waited for what seemed an eternity (30 min) before getting down from the stand. I recovered my arrow and was elated that it was covered from tip to nock with blood. I searched and searched for a blood trail with the aide of a flashlight to no avail. I backed out and came back in at daylight. I found my first bow kill about 20 ft from where I gave up the evening before. unfortunately the coyotes found him during the night. don't think there was an orphus, joint or muscle on my buck that had not been half eaten. I shot this buck for the meat but I guess I will have to settle for the memory. the memories are't physically filling but they sure taste bitter sweet.

what is your opinion on taking a doe that has young ones with her?

I got a trail cam as a Christmas present from my wife. been getting decent photos so far; except when the whole camera was incased in ice. I was hoping to get a pic or two of the big bucks that I was seeing just before bow season opened but nothing yet. haven't seen the three freaks from the summer months since the season opened. I did however get a bunch of pics of these two boys and one other prospect. I see this 8 on a regular basis. the future seasons look good. now if they would just stay around.

Well, I finally made it out for the first time time season. that thing called work and having a family has put play time on hold. I landed a place just down the street from my house to bow hunt after having to trek out to public lands for the last few years. saw some great deer over the summer. had four does walk within ten feet of my brush blind. they hung out for about 45 min. I had to throw a stick over them to get them to move on so I could get up and leave. I had almost forgotten what it was like to see multiple deer in the woods much less having the mind set to pass on multiple deer. take time to enjoy the things that God has blessed us with and be safe.
(no trail cam... maybe santa will read and take a hint)

you might try heading all the way down to the end (past the Coast Guard station) couple of parking spaces. if not; think it's a 10.00 fine. lol I used to catch specks and flounder about this time of year. haven't been down in a long time.

congrats on your first deer. to do it on public land is awesome. I like the old lever action guns too, as I carry a Marlin 30/30 that is about 50 years old. never been up to Caldwell but it has been on the list for a while now. now time to take another one before the season runs out.

I feel your pain. I lost my second deer of the year yesterday (bow). A good hit, good blood trail to a pool of blood and then just a few drops. crawled on my hands and knees for three hours. I have bumped bucks that were making rubs while on the way to the stand; stray dogs chasing deer. just hope to get out somewhere that I can use a gun before the season runs out. If I could use a gun where I am hunting at right now, I would be stacking meat for HFH. Things can only get better though. If you think drinking a few beers and watching football will help, I will surely give it a try.

I am sure you don't mind trading a little kiss from a scope to score on your buck. It just made the entire experience much more memorable. I bet you will not forget to keep your head back next time. ;)
    congrats; bag another

I have placed a balloon over the end of the barrel; cut the end of a sandwich bag open and slid it over the hammer and cap area and taped it in place. never had a problem. the loose bag allows you to cock the hammer. I always put the charge in before I left the house. DO NOT PLACE A CAP ON THE GUN UNTIL YOU ARE AT YOUR DESTINATION.

I like your idea of using the creek to enter and exit if you already know where you want to go. rubber boots and you're in there with little noise at all. just watch the wind.

inside the loop was my favorite area by far. at least half of the deer that I have killed over the years came out of the Verona Loop area.

I hunt 'backyard deer' so they are different all together. I saw six deer yesterday evening and three this evening. movement was a little later this evening but they were moving here. I have been hunting with the bow for about ten years now. never taken one with the bow,but still at it. I connected on a small buck this evening but ran out of daylight and the flashlight was no help. hope to recover him in the am. going to be a restless night.

the future looks good. I have a couple of young bucks that I am watching also. seems like the 'brutes' that I was seeing over the summer disappeared when the season opened. haven't heard of anyone taking them. hopefully they will show up again.

A comment titled: scent in response to a report titled: Scent

I have used various brands of scent to attract deer. one that I have had good results with is Mike Kellers Dominant Buck Gel. It is made by scent sheild. I have had trouble finding it in the past few years though. I have watched bucks come in checking the wind and get a whiff of it and it fires them up. they start grunting and urinating all over the place. I have even watched them eat the tree branch that I place it on. every deer is different. there is no magic potion that can put them into our scope/bead every time but if I have this particular product on hand, I use it.
I have also used scents like Tinks, Doe Estrus, etc and have had success but not like that of the previous. I have purposely pulled a drag off of a trail to see what happens and deer followed it through the crazy maze I walked.
In all it's a roll of the dice.

congrats on taking your first. though I have taken many deer with a gun, I have yet to take one with the bow. I have not been able to connect with the bow and have been at it for 10 years now. work and family limits my hunting but now I am almost strictly bow. it's a different game when you are up close and personal.
