Gonna buy a new rifle after the holidays, gonna get a bolt action so my dad can have his automatic back...Was wondering what kind of information I would get from everyone on here..I'm considering the Remington Model 700, Winchester Model 70, and possibly one the the Thompson Center guns, the Icon or Venture...What does everyone think? I've never shot anything but the 30-06 round, what does everyone else shoot? Any information would be greatly appreciated. What do you own? Ever had any problems with the gun? I'll be topping it off with a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40. Thanks

I've been using the Winchester ballistic silvertip bullets (.30-06) for quite a few years now. Been pleased with groupings from year to year...and have been very pleased with knockdown. I've recovered the bullet from deer and they the bullets have expanded perfectly.

Shot one buck at ~40yards and the deer's entire stomach was laying on the ground where he was shot...upon exit the bullet had essentially dissected the deer....Easy tracking job.

I usually slice and dice my own too, but I usually get at least one ground up...guess I need to find me a grinder.

Post location of land or message me if you hear anything. I've live in Richmond County and I'll give you my opinion of the location and any surrounding hunters/clubs that I'm aware of. There are some big deer in Richmond but depending on where you are you have to deal with the dog hunters. A lot of folks come from out of town to hunt with dogs here. Dogs are not allowed west of Little River, which is the small northwestern portion of the county

The Garmin works great for the lunar charts and so much more...Works great for tracking, especially in the dark when you have to go long distances, you can track back and not worry about getting lost...I personally use the compass a lot.
