  • Spent some time in the mountains this past weekend in the Pisgah National Forest area. No one should have a problem tagging a deer there. I personally wouldn't be able tto shoot any of these deer as they are more like pets than wildlife. All pictures were taken with my cell phone.

Hello to all. It has been my experience that we as outdoorsman have always been very generous people when it comes to helping other people. I have volunteered as a partipant to have my head shaved in a St Baldrick's event on April 26th in Raleigh, NC. St Baldrick's is a fundraising event to raise funds to provide treatment and research for childhood cancer. I would appreciate anyone who can donate to this great cause to do so no matter what the amount of the donation may be. What is happening to the magazine. I have been getting the NC Sportsman Magazine for several years and I always enjoy reading it. I have been a subscriber as well as picking it up off the shelf. This last issue is the October issue and you would think there would be lots of hunting related articles in this issue. There are only about 3 -4 full hunting articles in this issue and the rest is fishing. It seems like as each year goes by there is less about hunting and more about fishing. Even during times when it seems there should be much more about hunting, like now, there is an overwhelming majority of the magazine dedicated to fishing. I don't really understand it and was just wondering if anyone else is noticing and feeling the same. Congrats to everyone who has been lucky enough to take good deer thus far and good luck the rest of the season. I always enjoy seeing the pictures and stories here on the site.

Hope all is well with everyone. Love seeing all the great pics and great deer being taken this year. Don't really get a lot of time to post but figured I better say hi and good luck to everyone. Haven't seen the right deer on to pull the trigger as of yet. Only have one on camera i consider a shooter. Got these Spypoint Cams and love them except for the fact the pics will not upload here. Got the room ready for the little boy on the way who will be here Friday. The little girls have decided one of my deer mounts belong to them. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and good luck to everyone.

    Season Wrap Up Continued

    May 12, 2012 at 3:55pm

Well the 2012 Turkey Season is about to come to a close. I hope everyone has had a great season. I have had great times and frustrating times. It is officially over for me. I successfully tagged out taking both birds on 2 different Game Lands. One of the birds was taken on a 6 day per wk Game Land while the other was taken on a permit drawn hunt on Game Land. The best of the 2 is the one in the pictures along with my 2 future Turkey Hunting ladies. On this hunt I decided to go to a piece of Game Land I had never been Turkey hunting on before. I had only been there in deer season and trust me there are very few deer there. It being a 6 day per week area with drive in access and all. So, I got there before dawn and before anyone else after about an hr drive. As the sky lightened up I was listening intently. I heard a gobble way off to my right. So I got back in the truck and moved down the trail a ways. Each time I stopped I heard the bird gobble and may have even heard another one. It just seemed I wasn't getting any closer. I got almost back to the highway toward the other end and he gobbled 1 more time and then shut up. Needless to say that was just a little frustrating. I decided to back track and try to get a better direction on him. As I was heading back I didn't make it too far before I run into another guy who was driving along, stopping, standing up in the door of his truck, and making one of the worst sounds I have ever heard with a mouth call. He would get back in the truck and repeat 100 yds down the path. I decided I was going to put some distance between myself and this guy. I headed deeper into the tract of land and came to another intersection. I stopped and got out. The sun was coming up and I was sure the birds were already on the ground. Not really thinking I was goiing to hear anything, I blew the owl hoot. Immediately a bird gobbled strong a few hundred yds away. I reach in the backseat and grab my gear and head down the dead end path. I walk about a hundred yds and blow the owl hoot again. Another gobble, only now further away. I head back toward the truck and hit a path in the woods. I get to an L in the path and blow the owl hoot and again he gobbles. He is still 300 yds or more. So I head on down the path and eventually come up behind a feild after a couple hundred yds. I figure he is in the feild strutting with hens on private land and the hunt is over. I blow the owl hoot and nothing. Crow call and nothing. Slip the call in my mouth and let out a few soft yelps. Nothing. Then I really get down on it with some aggressive cutting, clucking and yelping. He gobbles only now he is problably 300 yds or so back towards where I came from. I head back that way and stop and call after about 100 yds. He gobbles. By now he is only gobbling at the turkey call so I am begining to feel a little rushed. He could be coming already but he doesn't seem any closer. I get back to the L in the path and call again with a few soft yelps. He gobbles but is still probably 300 yds plus. he is no doubt on private land as I am at the line. So I do the only thing I can do. I find a suitable tree and sit down. I waited a few minutes and called very softly. He gobbles but has not moved. I keep sitting quietly and a few minutes later he gobbles spontaneoussly. Nothing had made a sound. he gobbled all on his own. He is a little closer but not by much. I let out a few soft yelps and purs just to say to him, 'I'm still here waiting. Haven't gone anywhere.' At this point he cuts me off and I get on the ready. After about 15 min of hearing nothing I start to hear what sounds like a truck driving slowly down a rock rd on the private land. As I hear that I also hear what sounds like a turkey running in the woods. I figured I was done. I really thought some one had spooked the bird. I turn my head a little I i see a gobbler's head go through a very small opening. I am not facing quite right. I really figured I was done. Then all of a sudden he gobbled back toward where I parked all own his own. Again there had not been another sound in the woods. He is now over 100yds and dow a hill. He just ran by me at probably 45 yds. Maybe he wasn't spooked. So I turn myself on the tree and call very softly and he cut me off. It wasn't even 30 secs when I saw something black pass between 2 trees. Then I heard him spit. I knew then He was looking for that hen and was determined to find her. Thats why he was running around so crazy. He was gobbling on his own just trying to get her to talk back. So I found the next opening which would give me a shot of about 35 yds. no more openings beyond that util he was in my lap so I figured that would be where I would stop him. As he strutted into the small opening between 2 trees I clucked. He gobbled and stuck his head up> When the head went up the hammer went down. I got to my bord to find a great prize. He had an 11' beard, 1 3/4' spurs, and weighed 22 lbs. Great bird anywhere, but a rare find on a 6 day per wk Game Land. As I was leaving I saw 2 guys walking away a few hundred yds from where I was> They had been listening to him gobble and trying to get a direction on him. I asked if they had heard me calling and they said yes. So why do yall think they were trying to go to the bird if they heard me calling?
My twins loved the bord as you will see in the pics. So now for the Permit hunt. I went on that Thursday morning to a large peice of land bordering the river and had a creek running through it. i had looked at it on Google Earth and it looked like a place that should hold some birds. Well as daybreak came and went and no gobbling heard I began to explore. No turkey sign anywhere. no hunters either. I went over near the lake and lots of hunters but no turkey noise. I decided to just head home. I went with my Uncle on that Friday and had several close calls but no closed deals. On Saturday I got up late and decided I couldn't make it where I originally wanted to go so I headed for the lake. No turkey talk and lots of hunters. So I decided I would head for a very narrow stretch of land between the river and a creek/canal. I began walking the old railroad bed at about 0800. I turned the gps on on my phone. I would walk a couple hundred yds and stop and call and walk another couple hundred yds and stop and call. At one point I called and this hen started raising cain across the river. I figured I would sit there a minute b/c I have had hens get mad and do crazy things like fly across rivers. Maybe there was an old big strutter with her. After a few minutes of bickering back and forth with the hen and her coming to the bank and not flying across she eventually encouraged me to continue on in my journey by shutting up. So I continued on and after many more times stopping and calling I heard a gobble probably 250 yds in front of me. It was 0910. I eased to the top of the hill and set up against a tree and had the only about 50 yds between the river and myself and the creek was right up against the railroad bed. I called very softly and he cut me off. He had already closed half the distance and wasn't much over 100 yds. I was ready. Acouple minuts later he gobbled on his own seemed closer to the river and probably 75 ds away. After a coulple more minutes there had not been a sound. Afraid he had walked by me right against the river on the other side of the vines I purred really softly and he cut me off. I about jumped out of my skin. I turned my head just a little and there he was on the railroad bed with me about 35 yds. He gobbled again and went right back into a strut. I slowly eased the gun around and got on him. I clucked, he stuck his neck up, and I took him. It was 0915. Only 5 mins after he first gobbled. I got back to the truck after a long walk. The bird had an 11' beard, 1 3/8' spurs, And weighed 22 lbs. I looked at the gps on my phone and I had walked a grand total of a little over 6 miles. Well worth the walk. So overall the season was good for me when I was alone. When with other people not good at all. Oh, saw something yesterday morning I've never seen. I busted a hen and she had at least 8 pults with her. Some flew but some just walked away or meandered off. I backed out quickly to let them be. I hope she came back and gethered them quickly. There is not a gobbler that could have made me stay there. I wanted her to come back to those babies quick. Hope everyone enjoyed the summary of my season.

I live here in Garner and in need of help. I grew up in eastern NC and never had to worry about places to hunt. There are very few opportunities in this area. I needs websites, suggestions, or anything to help find land to hunt for free or leasing. I need a place to turkey hunt extremely bad. I do have a little place to deer hunt but that is all it produces is a few deer now and then. I began turkey hunting when I was in my teens and I really have a knack for it and love it. I have taken 4 turkeys with the bow. Three of those held the were at one time #1 in NC with a bow according to NWTF records. Also 3 of the 4 were taken without the use of a blind. As you can see I really love it. I need some help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Hope everyone is having a great yr thus far. Saw some really great deer on the forum this yr and congrats to all. As for me I never saw a buck I wanted to shoot, so I worked on the does a little. I did let some 15-16 in bucks walk so hopefully next yr? Had 2 on camera I might have considered shooting had I seen them in daylight but that didn't happen. Again, thanks for any info.

I made my way to Harris lake this past sat and just kinda stood there overlooking the cutover at day break. Saw one duck. It was a big duck but only one duck. Lots of shooting on the lake so I walked over to the bank. I honestly think they were shooting coots as I saw thousands as I walked along the bank. People still shooting @ 0900 but no ducks in the air. Really looking to shoot a few ducks. Anyone got any suggestions.

These are pics of a 141' 8 pt I took in 11-2005 back home in Martin County. This deer also mounted by Yankee's Taxidermy in Kinston. This deer showed up on a windy cold morning @ 0830 in the morning while I was rattling. Looked over and he was standing there 50 yds. The 3rd buck I rattled in during a 10 day span. Two of which I took and the 3rd was a 130' 10 pt someone else took about 100 yds away as the deer was headed for my location.

Got the 'King of the Pasture' back from the taxidermist last wk. Looks absolutely awesome. This is the 145' deer I got last yr. Mounted by Yankee's Taxidermy in Kinston. Does a fantastic job. Reasonably priced also. What do yall think? Looks good don't he?

Glad to hear that you are doing okay. Congratulations to ur wife and I commend u for holding the fort down while she is in school. I know that thing with creek was tough and it's a terrible thin fro lose someone to cancer and especially at such aa young age. I guess there is some solace in the fact that he didn't hang around and do a lot of suffering. It really did happen kinda quick. We lost my mother a couple yes ago after a better than 2 yr battle with cancer where she suffered and wasn't happy. We lost my wife's grandfather to cancer last yr just a few mos after his diagnosis bit there was really not much suffering with hom. I think all of us have been touched by cancer in some way or another and it's a terrible thing. I am abou TV to participate in a St baldricks event on Saturday and have my head shaved to raise money for cancer research for kids and it makes me feel as though I am doing something even though I have a really ugly head. Lol. With bein gin the health care field I see lots of bad but also see lots of good. Hang in there bud and go shoot a bird for creek. He wouldn't have it any other way. Good luck on that permit hunt. Never heard of that state land but any permit land can b good. I had permits last wk on roanoke river and found lots of birds but all still roasted together including the hens so not much luck. Got tillery this weekend so I will be trying to get one there. I didn't know creek ppersonally but from knowing him through this site I feel like I did. So I will try and get one for him. Good luck in the morning and lemme know how it goes. Good hearing from you

Everyone has their own opinion and thats fine. At 17 I probably would have shot both also. I don't know though. My nerves would have probably been shot and I wouldn't have had the ability to shoot the second one. Congrats anyhow. As for your comment to GT about the 150 and 105 buck in 10 mins? That deer will never hit 150 and the little 8 might be lucky to hit 80. Just saying. Like I said everyone has there own opinion. If you are going to rebut one then don't act like you are better than someone else and don' exagerrate the truth.

I just couldn't read this comment on that nice buck and not take the man's side. Seems like there is a little jealousy goin on here. I'm sure this guy killed the deer illegally and then posted it on this site for everyone to see. Duh!!!
I think he should have have just said he shot the deer in the woods b/c really it is no one's concern except his and maybe the landowner where he took the deer. Furthermore there are many 'City Limits' where you can legally hunt with the landowner's permission with archery equipment. So the only thing I can think is the accuser is jealous. Congrats on a good buck.

A comment titled: Hey GT and Viper in response to a report titled: Hunting Land

The twins are great. Hope all is well with both of you. Good to hear from you. Was really hoping to get a chance to meet yall at the DDC last year. I spent the entire Saturday running back and forth to the NWTF turkey calling competition. Complete waste of the entire day and my money. So GT, never enter that contest. Very poorly organized. Judges coming out from behind the curtain while certain people were calling. All day they kept telling me it would probably be 45 min before I was up. That started at 0945. I called at 1500. Maybe this year since I won't be wasting my time and money I will get to look around and maybe bump into yall. That is if the girls cooperate. They may not cooperate though b/c they like to go upstairs now and point at my mounts and say 'deer.' Then they want to touch em and if I don't pick em up to touch the deer they become very upset. Afraid they may get a little upset at the DDC. So anyway, like I said, hope yall are doing great. Keep me in mind if either of you figure out some trick to finding land. And by the way I would have posted some trail cam pics but I have these Spy-point cams now which I love but the pictures will not upload to this site. They are the right format just something must be tweeked a little different. Talk to yall soon

I have had some success back East on permit only Game lands taking a 120 in 8 pt and a few yrs later taking a 20 in wide (on the inside) 3 pt. Only saw the width and beams on that one and he was way over the hill. Probably in the 8-10 yr old range. Have been trying to hunt around central part of state and not seeing much on these Six day per wk areas. All the ones around raleigh are small tracts with lots of Hunters. Went to Nash county/Franklin county one day last wk to a tract and saw one deer track. Could hardly find a trail much less a track. But saw plenty of hunters. Congrats on that buck

The 145 buck is coming home on monday. I'll be sure to post a pick of the mount. That make 2 I got that are 140 or better. Now i'm looking a 150. I dog hunted until just a few yrs ago but I gave it up. Got tired of shooting small bucks. Not many great bucks taken in front of dogs unless they're laying in a very small patch of woods. Dog hunting is not what it used to be. Even a lot of the old timers will tell you that. Most of the younger generation just wants to kill, kill, kill, and tear up land. I got to where I enjoy just watching. I let several 120 class deer walk last yr. Can't wait to check the cameras sat. And I'm gonna call about that Warren County land. I'll share more about it if it seems worth it.
