  • I have no private land to hunt so I hunt all public land. This morning I go hunting and there is a truck parked at the gate on this public land. Its about 640am I grab my bow and stand and start walking down the trail. I get about 100 yards down the trail and I see a flashlight flashing at me about 50 yards off the trail, ok the guy is letting me know he is over there. I keep walking down the trail because my stand site is about another 400 yards or so down the trail and another 150 yard off the trail. Well I come out of the woods about 12 and a note was left on my truck 'If you come here and there is a truck parked go somewhere else or next time I will pop your tires'. WOW!! that got my blood boiling. So I can understand him being mad, but hunting public land it happens, it has happened to me 3 times this year. The land is plenty for a few guys to be on it hunting, and if your that worried about guys walking up on your stand don't set up right off the trail and 100 yards off the road. Am I just unaware of public land etiquette and if someone is hunting you go some place else?

    Only 3 1/2 days left

    September 08, 2009 at 6:28pm

It's that time of the year again. Caught this 7 pt hot on the trail of a hot doe.

    November 14, 2008 at 10:49pm

Killed this 8 pt. on dec. 7th at 7:45 from about 220 yards away.

Anyone seeing anymore rutting activity going on? I have seen two small bucks in the past two days.
This warm weather has killed the daytime rutting activity, hopfully Friday will bring a change in deer activity.
    Good Luck

Shot this 7pt at 4pm while he was chasing a doe.

    November 09, 2007 at 9:22pm

My girlfriends first day hunting, and takes him down with one shot using her new 243. I was more proud for her first deer than I was with any deer I ever taken.

It looks like he might have a injured back leg, and that is what is messing up his antler growth.

I agree, you need to let the bucks get older before you make a decision to cull or not. I try to age deer but its not easy once they get past the age 3-4 that is why keeping trail cam up all year and getting to know your deer is so important. Hunting clubs put the 15inch spread rule up because its much easier than having an age rule that 99% of hunters would mess up.

I shot power belts but after 100 yards they drop fast, plus i'm not sure if they expand that well or even at all. I switched to barnes 250gr spit-fire TMZ on top off 115gr of blackhorn powder, I have only shot them out to 200 yards but they are very accurate. They are a full copper bullet that mushrooms into 6 pedals... Just devastating on game.

When a deer is injured it effects the antler growth. Most of the time if a deer is injured on its left leg or left side of the body the opposite antler grows deformed. If he heals he could grow normal antlers next year.

I own a ruger m77 in 7mm rem mag she is my baby, I have a custom barrel, stock and trigger that I put together myself all toped off with a leupold vx-3 4.5-14x50. Also have a rem 700 in 7mm-08 thats really nice and my best friend has a model 70 in 30-06 thats nice except the trigger. I am a huge fan of savage as well I have one in 308 and 6.5x47 lapua, I think for the money you are not going to get a better shooting rifle, they are not the best looking though. I think you will be happy with any of the rifles you listed.

You guys are harsh to hunter777. I agree, I love being out in the woods enjoying mother nature and to me that is worth it. I grew up hunting in upstate NY and would go a whole season w/o seeing a single buck or even a deer, but I would still hunt every chance I got. But saying he is not a 'real hunter' because he is frustrated is just crazy. This season has a lot of hunters feeling frustrated including myself, but thats hunting. I don't believe for one second that either of you gentleman have never left the woods feeling Discouraged. hunter777 we only have a couple weeks left so get out and have fun.

I appreciate the advice guys, I think I'll give the note to the GW or police. If I go next time and he is there I'll just get some info off his vehicle and leave...I'm not trying to run into him in the woods and get shot, and I don't want to spend my 'gun Fund' to buy new tires. You know if It was 10 years ago I would probably be there every morning looking for his truck and rip him out of his stand, but you have to grow up sometime. There is a great bunch of guys on this site, thanks for all the advice.
    p.s
Viperx if my tires get cut I promise I will put his truck on blocks and toss his lug nuts.

A comment titled: Love Savage in response to a report titled: I know where this is heading but I gotta ask

I love savages I own a 10 FP Le in 308 and I am in the process of building a 6.5 x 47 lapua on the savage target action. They are not the best looking rifles for sure but they shoot very well for their price. As for the caliber, viperx is right its personal preference, the 270 is a very good deer caliber. IMO if you want to use it for bears also, and are on a budget I would go with the 308, ammo is cheaper and you can get heaver bullets. If you are talking about the 300 win mag if your shooting deer at very long ranges (over 500 yards) its a good choice, if they are less than 500 yards I would stay with the 308 (less kick). Any bullet or grain you want to shoot out of the 300 win mag you can shoot out of the 308. The 300 win mag is great, I am looking at getting a 300 win mag barrel for my encore, but if your on a budget the 308 is cheaper to shoot. Do your own research, thats half the fun of buying a new rifle. Good luck

I have been hunting eastern season and central season for about 5 years, and the deer rut at different times in each zone. I know three years ago in the central zone it was thanksgiving before I saw any bucks rutting. I grew up hunting in the Adirondacks and the deer rut hard for 2 weeks and its over, and down here its seems to last longer and not be as hard.

A comment titled: moon guides are a tool in response to a report titled: moon phase

I look at the moon chart from time to time and it is a good tool, but just like doe scent or a grunt call sometimes it works and sometimes not. I think the biggest effect on deer movement is the weather. For me, having a 2yr old and working 50hr a week I hunt every chance the old lady lets me, so if I can get out for a couple hours I'm gone regardless of what the moon or weather is doing. So get out and hunt every chance you can, let the smaller ones walk and a shooter will come by sometime. Just my 2cents.. Good luck
