Love the Trophy Rock, Deer Cane and Lucky Buck. Every year, they can't get enough of them.

Below is a revised law pertaining to deer retrieval that's currently going thru the legislature. Thoughts?

AN ACT to authorize the retrieval of killed or wounded deer using a single dog on a leash.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1. G.S. 113‑291.1 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

'(k) If a hunter kills or wounds a deer during the hunting hours authorized by subsection (a) of this section, the hunter may use a handheld light and a single dog on a leash to assist the hunter in retrieving the dead or wounded deer, and may dispatch a wounded deer using only a .22‑caliber rimfire pistol or a weapon otherwise legal for that hunting season. Pursuit and retrieval under this subsection may occur after the hunting hours provided for in subsection (a) of this section if necessary, but such pursuit and retrieval may not be accomplished using a motor vehicle.

For purposes of this section, the term 'dispatch' means the quick and humane killing of a wounded animal to prevent further suffering through infection, starvation, or other distress in the wild.'

SECTION 2. This act becomes effective October 1, 2011.

PS...Orange county dog hunters, there's a bill in the legislature that prohibits use of dogs for deer hunting in the portion that is currently open.

The boys made it another year without being.......hit by a car! These are city deer, so no shots from bows or guns to bother them. Just have to dodge the cars in So. Charlotte.

    February 12, 2011 at 2:31pm

Hunted all day Friday and today in Southern Anson. Saw nothing...so I end the hunting season just like I started it.
At least I got a couple in Nov to have some meat in the freezer.
Happy New Year to all. Sept '11 will give me something to dream about for the next 9 months.

    January 01, 2011 at 9:30pm

Twas' the night before bow season and all through the house, everyone was scurrying, even the mouse! The washer was washing the hunting clothes to kill scent and mom was wondering where the money all went. As I nervously replied that it went for some hunting stuff, she turned away without even a huff! She to remembered September last year, when I started bringing home all kinds of deer. Back straps and jerky and bratwurst too, will soon fill the freezer for me and for you! So wax your bow string and pack all your gear...deer season is opening for yet another year!
Have a great season, post your pics/stories, and be safe out there!

    August 17, 2010 at 1:29pm

Trophy rock has worked well so far. The deer seem to love it, but this guy, well he's just angry. One month and counting to 9/11!

    August 10, 2010 at 3:26pm

Checked the trail cams today. Still hitting the deer cane and trophy rock. Looking good for 9/11 and 12!

Delayed Hunting and Trapping Rule Changes Take Effect Aug. 1, 2010

2010-11 Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations also Effective Aug. 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 12, 2010) – The proposed hunting and trapping rule changes approved by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission in March 2009 but delayed for legislative review will go into effect on Aug. 1, 2010.

Along with these delayed rules, hunting, trapping and fishing rules proposed for the 2010-11 seasons, approved by the Commission in March 2010, go into effect on Aug. 1.

Fifteen hunting and trapping proposals were referred to the General Assembly by the North Carolina Rules Review Commission in April 2009 in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act. As a result, the rule changes could not take effect until they were reviewed by the legislature, which convened in short session on May 12 of this year. Legislators had 31 days to propose bills disapproving the rules.

Four bills were introduced disapproving the Commission’s rules. Because none of the bills was enacted into law, the following changes will take effect Aug. 1, 2010:

Require persons harvesting deer through the Deer Management Assistance Program to use tags provided by the Commission and report their harvests, whether those deer are antlerless or antlered. Allow harvest of deer on DMAP areas under the big game harvest report card and the bonus antlerless deer harvest report card, where applicable.

Change the description of where bonus antlerless deer harvest report cards may be used from “private lands” to “lands other than those enrolled in the Commission’s Game Land Program” in order to permit the use of these cards on military installations, national wildlife refuges, and other public lands that are NOT game lands.

Remove the daily bag limit for deer.

Allow hunters to use archery equipment to harvest deer during the muzzleloading firearms season on game lands.

Shorten the bow season by one week and open the muzzleloader season one week earlier to create a two week muzzleloader season.

Deer seasons in the Northwestern deer season will be changed so that the regular gun season is extended through January 1. Deer seasons in the Eastern, Central, and Western deer season structures will remain unchanged.

Deer seasons on game lands in the Northwestern deer season will be changed so that the regular gun season is extended through January 1. Deer seasons on game lands in the Eastern, Central, and Western deer season structures will remain unchanged.

Open all private lands in the Eastern, Central, and Northwestern deer seasons to the maximum either-sex deer season.

Assign all of Moore County to the Eastern deer season.

Allow falconry on Sundays, except for migratory game birds.

Allow bow hunting on Sundays on private lands only, except for migratory game birds.

Allow the use of crossbows anytime bow and arrows are legal weapons.

Disallow the selling of live foxes and coyotes taken under a depredation permit to controlled hunting preserves.

Allow a landowner with a valid depredation permit to give away the edible portions of deer to anyone. Require the recipient to retain a copy of the depredation permit.

Eliminate the requirement that a landholder must get a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit for the taking of migratory birds before getting a Commission permit to do so.

An online edition of the 2010-2011 North Carolina Inland Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest will be available at www.ncwildlife.org on Aug. 1, 2010. Hardcopies of the digest will be available mid-August.

I know there's lots of opinions on the use of corn/supplemental feed, and don't want to start an argument thread here on it's use.
Would simply like to know if you use corn(shelled or cob), do you put it out in a pile, or spread it over an area? I've done both, and had better success spreading it. When I pile a couple hundred pounds, it molds and the deer don't touch it.

These pics were taken in my front yard, near the Quail Hollow area of Charlotte. Wish we had that Jan. urban hunting season!

We knew it would happen sooner or later. All the farms around us have been seeing pigs past couple of years. This is our first encounter. Hopefully just passing thru.

Got an ATV or dirt bike in the shed you occasionally ride around on the farm or woods? NC senate bill 642, currently in the legislature, mandates the registration and titling of all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles with the Division of Motor Vehicles. In the first year alone over 100,000 off-road vehicle owners would be required to pay a registration fee of $15 and titling fee of $40. Vehicle registration information will also be sent to counties for property tax collections, thereby imposing yet another financial burden.

The next step the bill takes to becoming law is the Senate Finance Committee. Legislators can be reached by calling 919-733-4111 or via e-mail at the legislative Web site, www.ncleg.net.

The legislature will review some of the NCWRC adopted changes due to written opposition. Those changes will not be implemented for the 09-10 season. Hummm, now what 'group' could be leading the way on this?

The house and senate Committees have agreed on the Outdoor Heritage bill. The latest version allow Sunday firearm hunting except during 930a-1230p. Guess I'll be taking a long breakfast break. Other restrictions are private land, not within 500yds of a church or residence and certain urban counties restricted.

A comment titled: Re: Sunday Hunting--Hell, NO!!! in response to a report titled: Sunday Hunting--Hell, NO!!!

Unfortunately the Senate has amended the House bill to limit Sunday firearm hunting to after noon only. It's now stuck in committee with neither the Senate nor House moving on this important bill. So Sunday firearm hunting may go unresolved for another year. Let's hope not. Email your House member and encourage them to reject the Senate amendment and pass the bill

A comment titled: Bill to allow in response to a report titled: Why can't I hunt on Sunday with a rifle?

There was a bill introduced in both the NC Senate and House to allow Sunday gun hunting on private land, but it died in committee. Maybe next year.

Creek...know what you're going thru. I too am in Anson, and getting a wildlife officer to respond to you is almost impossible. And Of. Davis, the one that used to return your calls, got charged with burning down his own house for insurance $$. Call the sherriff. That's what we finally had to do to stop trespassers, dumpers and out of season poachers.
good luck, and may see ya sometime @ Lady Bugs or Hub.

Used mine just this morning. When I got to the stand, I already had 3-4 bloodsuckers on me. Cranked up the thermacell, climbed the ladder, and within 8 minutes, all was good. no mosquitos, flys, no-seeums. Quiet operation, no odor to speak of. Basspro has it on sale, but you can get about anywhere. And like BBgun says, get extra refills.
