On November 7, 2015 I had to drag my 10 year old son Jason out of the bed at 5:30am to go deer hunting. When we arrived in the stand on a powerline right of way in Saluda County it was warm and muggy. I left the mosquito spray in the truck and they were about to carry us off. The deer usually cross on our right and the shot on that side is maxed out at around 150 yards. The lane to the left goes to around 500 yards. I was hoping that if we saw any nice bucks, that they would be close or to our right. We had been sitting there without seeing any action for about an hour and a half, when I noticed a flash of a deer's white tail zip across the powerline at about 300 yards to our left. I told Jason what I saw and told him to get ready. He moved his .270 caliber rifle in that direction and began to wait and watch. Just then this nice buck stepped out onto the powerline looking for the doe that he had just pushed across. I watched with binoculars as the buck stopped and stood with his chest towards us. I told my son to hold the gun steady and if he felt that he could make the shot to squeeze slowly. As I watched the buck the gun went off and the buck buckled and turned. He ran about 35 yds and piled up. Before he fell I told my son, 'You got him!' My son was so excited when the buck fell and wanted to go see him immediately. I asked him was he glad that I made him get up this morning? He said, 'Yes!' This was a great experience for both of us and I just wanted to share.
