  • First year hunting in NC. Tips on where/how to be successful appreciated

I'm a recent college graduate (WVU '15) from West Virginia. I moved down to the Charlotte area and will be looking to do some bow hunting this coming fall. I don't know anybody with private land in the area, I was wondering what game lands would be good for a day/weekend of hunting and if anybody has any experience with hunting around this area. Is private land access hard to come by? How are the deer populations in NC? Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!! Unfortunately I cannot give you any advice on game lands but I know every year there are a lot of nice deer killed on them...Certain parts of the state hold more deer and bigger deer. I stay in the SE part of the State about 45 minutes from the Coast. We have decent numbers in places but the opportunities at mature deer don't come often. We have a lot of hunting pressure down here as well as a swine and predator problem. Both have had an enormous impact on the deer heard down this way. There are good areas that are less pressured out your way and in the central and northern counties. Being it is August, finding private land right now would be extremely difficult since most clubs have paid dues and properties have locked in leases. Your best bet other than game lands is to find a new friend that just so happens to hunt and just so happens to have family that has land and just so happens to want a hunting buddy or doesn't mind sharing lol...You never know though...It never hurts to ask...The worst they can say is no and You will hear that a lot more than you will here Yes. Hopefully you can find something and sling some arrows this fall. Good Luck and keep us posted on how your season goes...
