I gave this young buck a 'free pass' for the 2014 season. He needed a couple of years before he would be a trophy. On the morning of September the 20th, he and a cowhorn where eating acorns under my stand a first light. They where joined by a larger buck who was raking his rack in the branches of small dogwoods. As the three started to leave the area, the cowhorn lead, this small rack buck was next and the larger buck followed along last. As they passed behind some thick cover , I used the opportunity to draw my Bowtech Assassin and aimed down a shooting lane they would cross. First deer crossed, second deer crossed, third deer stepped into the shooting lane and I stopped him and released a carbon express. The mule kick gave me confidences that the bloody arrow confirmed. It was just daylight so I drove home and got my 12 year old son so he could experience tracking and recovering the deer. The deer only ran a hundred yards, but to our surprise, it wasn't the buck we where expecting. The two deer had switched positions when they where in the thick cover. Unfortunately the young buck 'free pass' only lasted one week.
