I am currently a student at East Carolina University and interested in finding hunting property near school for next year (2014 Season). I have given it much thought and researched about joining clubs and such, but I've heard it is also easy to join with a farmer or farmers and hunt their property. I'm from the Western part of NC and hunt when I can at home, but am looking for something closer to school. Does anyone have any suggestions, do I join a club or link up with farmers?

    Depends
If you've got the cash for a club it can be beneficial, as alot of the pre season stuff will be established. If you're like me and don't have the cash and like doing your own thing, look up your local and surrounding county web sites, the tax dept. usually has interactive GIS maps and you can look up parcel data, who owns what etc.... and you can look up the farmers in the phone book, be persistant as most folks either hunt thier own stuff or has a cousin or buddy who does.

I would try to do both. Clubs are OK but if you find a farm to hunt as for me it's better. The only problem I have with private land is others hunting near you. I've found out if you shot a good deer many others will try to hunt the same land. As well as a club. Find some where close by, if I have a place close by I hung more often as to driving an hour. Good luck

    Neither
The most over looked area of hunting is public land on the tar river...a buddy and me duck hunt it. If you have access to a john boat then you'll get no better place to hunt true MONSTERS. We've found sheds back in our duck hunting whole that dwarfs both bucks i have on the wall!
