  • Cormorant Hunting Training Dates Set

The SCDNR has set the dates for two training sessions for harvesting double-crested cormorants on the Santee-Cooper Lakes, a first for South Carolina.

These federally protected birds have become a nuisance throughout the state, especially in Santee-Cooper's waters, so South Carolina was granted a Depredation Order by the US Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS).

The season for hunting cormorants will begin on Feb. 2 and run through March 31. The training dates are set for Tuesday, Jan 7 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Fed 8 at 2 p.m.

All persons participating in hunting cormorants will be required to go through one of these training sessions and have a valid hunting license. For more info, visit the DNR's website at
