Most people think that the best time for catfishing is in the summer. But according to Daron Doolittle of 34 Bait & Tackle in Newberry, the beginning of catfish season is now on Lake Monticello.

“The best catfishing is November thru May,” said Doolittle. “Catfish like cold water and with the water temperature starting to cool, the fishing is starting to pick up.” Doolittle said that usually he averages between 8 to 20 catfish per trip, and they can range from 4 to 40 pounds.

Doolittle stated that there is no real pattern to the fishing now. He will either anchor up or drift fish with fresh, cut shad depending on the wind, weather, and where the cats are holding.

A good depth sounder is needed on Lake Monticello. Doolittle explained that there are no real “honey holes” on this lake. “There are some general areas that I like to fish, but you have to find the fish each day,” Doolittle stated.

Doolittle likes to start out fishing in 40 feet of water and will go as deep as 60 feet whither he is anchored up or drifting. The fish will hold on the back side of humps or in deep holes, and this is where he is looking for fish.

So if you are looking for a cold weather cat fishing trip, give Doolittle a call at (803) 405-1374 or drop by to see him on Highway 34 on the way to Lake Monticello to get your bait.
