  • Record Year for Upstate Bear

It is a record year for Upstate, Game Zone 1, bear hunters so far this season. Still hunters have already bagged 55 bears, plus a new record weight bear was taken.
Heath Smith, who was hunting deer in Greenville County, took a record breaking bear weighing in at 609 pounds. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, this beats the old South Carolina black bear record of 594 pounds that was taken in Oconee County.
Bear hunters thought that that it would be a tough hunting season this year because of the lack of acorns in the mountains.
Frankie Sanders of Mountain Rest who killed the first bear of the season last year said that he saw several bears, but the big ones left after the white oaks stopped dropping in the area that he was hunting.
Still hunting without dogs ended Wednesday, October 23, and party dog hunting for bear opens Thursday, October 24 and runs through October 30.
