  • Help me understand Tillery options

Last year, I had considered hunting in Tillery Game Land. Deer hunting is NOT by permit only. (Turkey IS). It is listed as a 6 day per week game land.

However, when I finally got around to planning a visit, I realized it is only open for GUN during a one-week period (plus a little bit at the end of the season).

Here is the language from the NCWRC:

    TilleryGameLand –HalifaxCounty (5,219 acres)
    ● Six-day-per-week area.
    ● GunEither-SexDeer Season:Oct. 13 –Oct. 19 and
    Dec. 26 – Jan. 1 (moderate season).

Does this mean that archery and muzzle are allowed throughout their respective seasons, but gun only during those times?

What does 'moderate season' mean here?

    Tillery Game Lands
    Hawkman,

    TilleryGameLand –HalifaxCounty (5,219 acres)
    ● Six-day-per-week area.
    ● GunEither-SexDeer Season:Oct. 13 –Oct. 19 and
    Dec. 26 – Jan. 1 (moderate season).

This is describing gun season for either sex, which is basically referring to harvesting a doe.

Per page 55 of NC Regulation Digest ' Note: Antlerless deer may be taken only in those areas and
during those times described elsewhere in this publication.

So, you can harvest a buck on Tillery gamelands with a rifle the entire length of legal gun season (until you fill your tags). However, you can only harvest a doe on Tillery game lames from the dates of OCT 13-19 thru DEC 26-Jan 01.

Each gameland doe harvest varies depending on the county, 'Moderate' comes from this section also on page 55 of NCRD

    'Gun Either-Sex Deer Season
    ● Deer of either sex may only be taken during the gun season
during those dates indicated on pages 48–51. Most gun eithersex seasons fall under one of the following four categories in
    North Carolina:
    - Maximum: Either-sex harvest is allowed the entire gun season.
    - Moderate: Either-sex harvest is allowed the first six open days
and the last six open days of the regular gun season.
    - Conservative: Either-sex harvest is allowed the last six open
days of the regular gun season.
    - Introductory: Either-sex harvest is allowed the last open day
    of the regular gun season.'

Sorry so long winded, but look at the last paragraph of page 46 and continue on page 55.

I'm in a hunt club near Weldon, and this is how I have always understood it.
