    Hi everyone,

Best wishes to you all as the deer season approaches!

I wondered who here uses any type of deer lure/scent. I don't have my own 'place' to deer hunt, and take my opportunities when I can get them. So, I can't set up a long-term scrape-type situation, but was thinking of hanging/spraying something when I'm hunting.

I suspect there's some bogus products out there (maybe they all are).

Any recommendations? Cautions? If I'm driving a substantial distance to hunting, I'd rather not screw it up, but would love to increase my odds as well.

Most people would say no scent is the best scent but, at this time of the year deer are on the feed. Fitzgerald's scents makes a deer dander spray that for me has proven well in that deer will follow the scent of another deer's trail. Spraying this on your boots walking in will set a trail that other deer might follow. Works on hunting dogs.....I know this first hand. Vanilla scent can also be effective this time of the year. deer are curious and love anything sweet.

    thanks.
Thanks Vipe.\r\n\r\nMy uncle (hunts in Ontario and Newfoundland, Canada) is very particular about keeping his hunting clothes as scent free as possible. He doesn\'t wash them in regular detergent. I think they stay outside on a line for long periods of time to air out.\r\n\r\nHe then stores them in a tub of some sort that he has partially filled with leaves and debris from the forest where he hunts. He of course doesn\'t put any of this on until he exits the vehicle where he is hunting.\r\n\r\nI thought the leaves in the container was a pretty good idea. Any smell related to the forest itself must be pretty good.

I try and stay scent Free or as close as the area was before I got there...However, I have a friend that swears they come to Grape Kool-Aid sprinkled on the Ground each time he hunts lol....It's hard to say really because If someone has success using a certain product then the products gonna get the credit and if someone has Great success just keeping it simple then their opinion will be different...I can honestly say that I've tried my share and have never had the results they show on the package or T.V. but I would say to just do your homework and read the signs and then plan a ambush and get to where the Deer want to be...I try not to hunt directly over Corn because it's so hard to leave the area at dusk without spooking the whole herd time after time but do put corn in the general area to keep them interested in milling around there....Good Luck

As stated, stay as scent free as you can. That can be hard in early season since it is pretty hot and humid still, but you got to make an effort and play the wind as best you can.

As for scents, since deer are still on their normal feeding schedule stick to anything in that department. Sexual scents aren't gonna do anything but make them alert since it isn't a natural scent to them right now.

Corn scents, sweet smells, or none at all might even work the best. I know where I hunt in early season I don't use any scents, but I do have corn feeders in the area so that works to keep a number of them around.

I have a friend that urinates in every scrape he finds by his stand and he smokes cigarettes the whole time in the stand while wearing blue jeans a red flannel jacket and he kills a nice mature buck every year and swears that the human urine makes the buck mad and brings em in frequently to freshen up his scent on the scrape. This is all 100% true and I did not believe it myself until I went hunting with the fool and watched him do it and have had to help him drag out bucks on several occasions!

My Pal Don also pees in all the scrapes he finds and I couldn't believe it but he has Video of Nice Bucks only a few hours after he did working the same scrape but all urine will turn to ammonia once the air hits it anyway...Even the stuff you pay $10 a ounce for lol

ALL GOOD INFO SO FAR. IT HAS BEEN HIT OR MISS FOR ME. WHAT WORKS ONE PLACE WILL NOT DO A THING IN OTHER PLACES. THE BEST ADVISE IS COVER YOUR SCENT AND PLAY THE WIND....THAT WILL BE MORE VALUABLE THAN ANY LURE YOU CAN BUY...I HAVE HAD PRETTY GOOD LUCK THOUGH WITH MINERAL LICKS AND MOCK SCRAPES THOUGH.......
