Union County's John D. Long Lake has taken a turn for the worse in the past few years, and as a result, the SCDNR is closing the lake until July 1, 2015. The DNR will draw down the lake and remove the fish, a drastic move necessitated by the overpopulation of bass in the lake which has had a negative impact on all other species in the watershed.

Aside from restocking after removing the current population of fish, the DNR will also perform enhancement work on the floor of the lake to provide more structure for the new fish. Anglers who are used to fishing this lake can find alternatives in Edwin Johnson Lake in Spartanburg County along with Jonesville Reservoir.
