Huntman (my son, Hunter) and I started out this season about as green as anyone could - like the blind leading the blind with no turkey hunting experience. We had watched several youtube videos and got a lot of useful advice from friends on this forum and others. We had seen several turkeys during deer season so I didn't think we would have any trouble getting a couple. I started out this season with a pipe dream of Huntman getting his 1st turkey w/ his shotgun and then me trying to get my 1st with a bow.
We started seeing that this was not going to be as easy as we had originally thought. Every Saturday all day and as many evenings as we could hit the woods and we were not seeing any turkeys - heard a few but we were never able to call them in. When we were in the truck headed for work, school, baseball games, etc we would see them here and there but not in the woods. lol
I know Huntman was getting discouraged and honestly I was also but I was like a man on a mission.
Friday morning when I was going to start my truck I heard a tom gobbling in the bottom behind our house (150yds or so), I went on to work thinking I'd try that area in the evening when I got home. Walked in about 6pm and spooked about 6 does and a hen. Just sat in my spot until 6:30 then I hit the Spursuader (slate) a few times. I went to adjust my hat about 15 minutes later and just as I did I saw a Tom about 70yds out. He never made a peep, just snuck right in quietly. He must have seen me move because he eased on away from me and out of sight. Well I figured that he probably roosted in that area and planned on trying him again this morning.
I asked Huntman if he wanted to go but he said he wanted to sleep in - half discourgaed from the lack of action and half wore out from baseball games.
I headed out this cold windy morning and was about all set up in the same spot when I heard Tom start gobblin and I quickly decided to shorten the distance and moved about 80 yds closer to where he was. Quickly got set up and sat in my turkey seat just listening to Ol' Tom and thought he'd come through a spot out in front of me. He sounded off for a pretty good amount of time (I was really enjoying that) and then went silent. I hit a few soft yelps on the Spursuader and then put it away. A few minutes later, out of nowhere that joker sounded off on my hard right heading sorta behind me - last place I expected him to be. I glimpsed him and he was behind a small thick patch so I got up crouched and turned quickly towards him. I was up on my toes sorta sitting on my ankles w/ my gun up. I had a good opening I was hoping he'd come into but he was moving sooo slow - seemed like he stayed in the same spot for 10 minutes. I can't express how bad my arms, legs, and feet were hurting and I was starting to shake a little. And he was struttin and gobblin but was not getting into my opening. Couldn't take anymore and had to adjust my feet so I got on one knee which was a little more bearable. The brush I had stuck up around me provided some cover but I think he was getting suspicious and he took a few steps back in the direction where he had come from. I quickly found a smaller hole but I didn't really like it and it was about twice as far as I had hoped to be shooting. I feared that I may not have another chance so I squeezed the trigger and down went Ol' Tom shortly after 7am. I was so excited but really wished my little buddy had been with me. Huntman was excited and this has renewed his wanting to pursue his 1st turkey.
I shot this Tom (my 1st turkey) w/ #6 out of a Remington 1100 (no choke) and according to my Nikon rangefinder it was a 43yd shot. He has a 9 inch beard w/ 1' spurs. I don't have a scale but he felt around 20lbs +/-.
Even a blind squirrel will find a nut now and again. lol

    COOL DEAL!!!
That's AWESOME Man!!! I'm so Glad you stuck with it and didn't give up...Like Diane said (And I have seen)..Alot of people watch TV and think Turkey hunting is easy but as you now know, It's not always that easy lol. That's a great Bird!!! Most of the Easy Birds are killed by now so that should make you feel even better. I know it was bitter-sweet not having your side-kick with you but I know there will be others for you Guys...I loved that Play-By-Play!!! Made me feel I was crawling around with ya lol...I've did my share of that for sure this season...sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't but then you get to try again lol CONGRATS again!!!! I'm tickled for ya!!!and Don't blame ya for taking that shot..It only takes 1 pellet to knock him over and heck there's been several times this year that I couldn't hit'em with 1 pellet @ 20 yards lol

Thanx everybody! I was afraid that I was writing too much but it was such a cool experience I thought it was worth getting a little long winded. lol First time I've ever been that close to a turkey while he was gobblin and immediately followed by drumming (I guess that's what you'd call it).
For anyone still tryin' to land one, keep at it. I didn't think it was going to happen for me but ya just never know. I just kept thinking that I was for sure not going to see one sitting in the house. lol
We're gonna see if we can put Huntman on one this week - hope the weather cooperates.
Good luck to everybody this last week.
