Opening Morning started at 0430 with me wishing my Father Happy Birthday. Today is his 70th Birthday and with today being opening day it was already special. Before we headed to our hunting area we said a prayer giving thanks for us to spend the day together, allow using to enjoy another sunrise. We got to our hunting area and set up around 0600. Dad used one of his owl calls and we had one gobble back at us. Just before Sunrise we had one fly in behind us and had he gobble at us twice but he would never show up. I did a couple of calling sets and another Tom that appeared interested but again he did not show up. Around 0900 we were just sitting there have a nice chat when he told me he thought he saw something fly into the field on the 'far' end. I then heard the crows on that end of the field really get upset. I did a couple of assembly calls followed with some pur and cluck. He had two Hens pass in front of him and I could hear the disappointment in his voice. A couple of minutes later it appeared everything got really still and quite and then the quietness was broken by a pump action shotgun that startled me, due to I was not expecting it. When he finally stopped shaking and able to talk he told me he said 'I got him' I asked where was he and he told me he is at the end of the field. I asked he’s 'where' he then said at this end of the field. When we walked it off it was a 45 yard shot. Me and my Dad have been able to hunt for over 30 years together and he has been hunting over 60 years. This was his FIRST Thunder Chicken and I am not sure who was smiling more him or me. 18lbs, 1 1/8 inch spurs and 10 inch beard. I have heard of stories like this happening but would have never thought I would have been able to experience something like this with my Dad. Happy Birthday Dad.
