Riding the back roads looking for Turkeys with a fellow poster and rounded the corner on a Rural route and seen this little fella standing in shock...Mother nature can be cruel!!! I had to get on my way and the nearest landowner assured me that he would Call the Sheriff and have this guy put out of his misery...I Love Deer Hunting but seeing something like this just gets to me...Call me a softy but It's just sad!!! What would you have done???

    SAD
I would put it out of it misery, if I had a gun with me. Same thing happen to me years ago, a doe in the side ditch with 4 broken legs. I seen her hold her hold up. I stopped and put her out of her misery. A guy stopped and told me that she had been there all weekend, he thought she was dead.

    Sad for sure
Agree with you on 2 things GT: Hunters are the only logical solution to keep populations in check and any licensed hunter or responsable adult with the means (piston, etc.) should be able to legally dispatch that animal on the spot. Not sure how the law stands on that??

    SAD
Guys, I was just passing by and I really wanted to put the little fella down but my options were limited at that time..Any other time I would have had my 1911 with me but was taking the long way around the country heading to bass Pro when I found him...I agree...If you don't feel a sense of sadness each time you take the life of a innocent animal...Your NOT a Sportsman...I hope the Sheriff got there quick...Still bothers me!!!

    UPDATE
UPDATE!!! This has been eating at me so to ease my mind, I stopped at this area today (With my 45, Just in case the deer was still alive) and asked the people if they did indeed get the Sheriff to come by and they said Yes BUT...Even the Sheriff didn't have the heart to dispatch this Buck after he seen it laying there in shock so He the Called the Animal Control officer and in about 45 Minutes after I notified them about this deer, It was done and took away with no more suffering. I know it at least makes me feel better and wish I would have been able to do more when I first encountered him and the nearby landowner told the Sheriff that I was wanting to kill it myself and he informed her that 'I couldn't have did that!!'...LMBO!!!OK Whatver? I don't think there's a Jury anywhere that would convict me of such a deed but anyway...It is what it is I guess and 45 minutes is better than what could have been Days.

    ammo
GT when you went to basspro did they have much ammo? I cant find 22 long rifle anywhere. I went to basspro in concord 3 weeks ago, the ammo shelf was empty. glad the animal control dispatched the deer. Most county sheriff department wont do it because of all the paper work when they fire there gun.

They had right much ammo but I did here a Guy ask for 22s and he was told that they were out of 22 9mm 44 & 45 and a few others...My friends wife works at a Gander Mountain and said when the last truck came that people were lined up and as soon as the ammo came in the door and was recorded, it was sold instantly. Not sure if it's true but heard there was only 1 manufacturing company for ALL 22s and that's the problem? I did see some 22 ammo at the Classic but even the Remington was $18.95 for a pack of 50!!! OUCH!!!!!! But people was paying that!! Yeah I'm glad someone put that little fella down, I didn't care who.

That was really a sad situation for that little deer. It was hard to see him all broken up like that and trying his hardest to get to safety. Even harder to leave him not knowing if he would be there hurting in the cold all night.I'm glad you done your best to get him help,if you hadn't stopped he would probably suffered a lot longer.

    Well wanna know something
How bout not this past season but the season before my brother hit three deer at once above our house with his truck. So two of them only had broken legs and where still pretty much alive. Well we did like we was supposed to and called sheriffs deptartment and waited for a hour and a half. Well forgot to tell this earlier but was about a week or two after deer season went out. So after waiting that long we call to make sure they was on the way becuase we wasn't leaving til they got there for three reasons. One the one deer keep getting up and getting back in middle of road, two they was still alive and it would be unethical to leave them suffering, and three we know alot of people living around us that would love the meat cause without it they would go hungry. Well they tell us to just leave it the deputy be there within another hour or so. Well i decide to call wildlife and ask can i go ahead and disbatch them and they told me only if I wanted a fine and a court date. So I had to wait another hour and then the deputy told me to shot it anyways. Well it's a load of BS when it comes to the laws about this. Oh by the way i asked a game warden after the fact and he said he would have had to charge me $200 in fines plus loss my license for a year for killing deer out of season.

    heartless rules
I think some of the rules they expect you to follow are senseless and heartless. No human would want to suffer that way and they should not expect a animal to.

    Stupid!!!
RBBH, That does suck!!!! Let me just say that on any other day and I had my 45 then that little Deer wouldn't have suffered the said 45+ minutes that it did and it WOULD NOT have went to waste...It's all about the money it seems whenever your trying to do a good deed and it backfires on you...Trust me...I've been on that end of the chain also!!!!
