I use mouth calls from a from different makers. My favorite is Hook's Custom Calls.I also use some from Primos,Knight and Hale, and HS Strut.I most use the Hook's Custom Mouth call the most. One they have called 'The Pro' is a good one. There a lot of guys out there making custom mouth calls. Do some searches you should find a bunch. Mouth call are my number one go to caller. Good Luck

LOL let me know jager, I have sold 13 this week alone but yeah I also use a Mouth Call alot to eliminate the movement...Alot of them on the market for sure but at $10 to $15 for 1 Call is crazy!! I did but a Tom teaser at Bass Pro last week for $10 but for the price...I didn't see the Big deal?...I mean they all are based on the same design..Tape-latex and a Cut? and being a simple kind of guy I prefer the Walmart H.S. Strut and my favorite is the Cutt'N 2.5...I also like the Old MAD flip over series but they are hard to find anymore...As far as getting the most out of them...Keep them in the Fridge when your not using them and also rinse them in Listerine and separate the reeds to keep them from sticking...They sell a few items for this but wow!! the price!!! I buy a bag of 50 of the Floss/Pick combos and break off the plastic 'Pick' part and use them to separate my reeds in between use...also if you keep them in the plastic case..Take your knife and whittle a little hole in case of I'll simply crack it on purpose so it (The case) can breath..As far as year to year...The Calls I use are like $5 each so I usually just get new ones...I have found that in a years time the latex will break down and sound different or I'll get a sore throat of something so after the season, I'll toss them.

Spursuader is not only my favorite call, but it is the only call I use, lol. I was just thinking why I went and bought a turkey vest that holds all those different calls when I only carry one. The spursuader is a great call and I know from experience that it works.

    Well here is my list:

Pot Call: Spursuader of course...Had a couple Primos and H.S. Strut but was disappointed in performance in the field. There is always humidity and moisture around me and it just became annoying to prep these calls every time I wanted to call...

Mouth Call: ???? I kinda suck with all of them but the Primos calls are the friendliest to use imo...

Box Call: Primos Box Cutter (Compliments of GT...Thank You Sir)

I mostly use H.S. products. My lineup includes: HS lil deuce glass, HS lil deuce slate, HS derringer glass, HS closer box call, and many HS mouth calls (sm double d, derringer, deep cut, lil strut). I just rinse my mouth calls thoroughly with water and have not had a problem getting more than one season out of them (have heard of ppl getting 5+ years out of them). It obviously doesn't take a custom call to call in turkeys, I say get what you can afford and practice. Price wise, I'll take my small arsenal of mass produced calls any day of the week over one custom call.

I would say you are a H.S. Strut fan PDS lol....I hope you are doing well and good luck bagging a couple birds this year!! Are you going after one with that bow this year??

    mass produced
Guess everyone is welcome to their opinion on calls, and your right it don't take a custom call to kill a turkey. But personally speaking, when you come across someone who has turkey hunted for years and taken several turkey and puts hours into one call to perfect it to sound just right, you can count on getting a call that is going to sound right and last,if you know how to use it.Not to mention when you buy mass produced calls everybody out there calling that turkey is going to sound just like you. I think turkey hunting is like fishing, you keep throwing the same lure everybody else on the lake is throwing pretty soon the fishing are going to keep right on swimming,I've seen it happen. I'm sorry,I just like being a little different,I think its what gives you the edge over everybody else.Good Luck To Everyone and support you local crafter.

Sorry if i ruffled your feathers. Wasnt trying to get anybody stirred up. I was just saying i like to support local craftsman when they make a good product. good luck with your voice call or whatever you use. Just thought there was a better way to say what call you prefer than to say it the way you did. Didnt mean to make anyone mad. I come from a long line of crdftsman, guess thats why i am such a big supporter. good luck

I got lot of turkey calls. I got just as many custom calls and I do production calls. I like all calls. What ever it takes to get the turkey to respond I use.

    I agree
I agree ncturkey. Everybody should use what works best for them. Some people can make a better sound with a box call, while others do great with a mouth call. I have a bunch of differnet calls myself, but I can make better sound with a slate call. I have tried and tried to make a good sound with a trumpet call and its hopeless, lol. Some people can pick up any call and make it sound great, just not me. Good luck to you this season, hope you get a big'un

I agree that it's a personal preference and the few Calls I make could never compete with the mass China produced Calls that the PROS endorse and that's why I started making calls...Chances are if you run into 10 Turkey hunters, 9 of them are going to be blasting the woods up with the next big thing in Turkey calls that are new on TV this season...I decided I wanted a Different sound and like most Custom Calls, Mine have fooled Turkeys...Most people on this site that have got a Call from me has had success or at least say they have. It's totally PDSs choice to spend his Money as he wishes, I was just wondering if PDS ever posted a Turkey kill??? Can't recall but anyway..I have my share of Custom Calls by other call makers myself and in PDSs defense, I also prefer a HS Strut mouth Call...Have I ever got 5 years out of 1 ? LMBO!!! NO!!! I haven't, I mean..It's a $5 call for crying out loud But people are blind to the truth about craftsmanship and that's why I have been unemployed since Sept because China took my job of 20 years but my Mother taught me not to worry about things that I had no control over so I try my best not to and I don't charge $40 for a call lol, Hell most Custom Calls cost twice as much as I charge but again...would people pay it or go to Walmart and Buy a China Call for less?.. If I really thought about the Wood, Power Bill, Supplies like Sandpaper, Slate, Glass, Sealer ETC...I might be going backwards? It's just something I like doing...Anyway, I wish all you guys the best of Luck and would share a tree with any of you regardless of what Call you carried....GT

You pretty much summed up what I was trying to say. It really is a personal preference as to what works best for the individual. I suppose people think I am your sales rep or something, lol. But I am a craftsman myself,my Dad is and my grandpa was. Its a gift to be able to create a product by hand and I know doing it by hand can be costly. I have started projects myself and thought why in the world am I doing this. But like you, I do it because I enjoy it and get satisfaction knowing I done it myself, just like the turkey fans and the capes. I know the time you put into your calls and that they are great quality.
I didn't mean to get anyone on here mad,I just feel strongly about supporting local crafters. So whatever call you choose, good luck .

    My new Primos Gobble shaker.

Just bought it this morning and WOW! I love ot.

I don't have any mouth calls ......yet, but I do have a Knight & Hale slate call, and a Prilos push/pull style box call.

Box call is okay I guess, but not very impressive sounding. I like the slate call, but I need to get a weatherproof striker.

Matter of fact, I have been practicing and playing with the striker almost every day for the past month.

Took it outside today and it barely made a sound.
Almost felt like oil had been dripped on the tip of the striker.

    HUmidity change? Temperature change?

I about shot a Idiot myself on Public land with a Strutter Decoy and a damn Gobble shaker...Some real Clowns out there...as far as your call...Any Call...Calls and Strikers need to be conditioned before each use...Moisture, Finger Prints ETC will kill the sound of any call!! Before your First yelp on a friction type Call...Clean Surface and striker End with Scotch Brite Pad.

I'll be hunting on private land, so I won't have that issue with other people> Only other ones who will be hunting are my son and nephew, who both ride with me.

Yeah, funny thing about that slate call. Up till yesterday, it sounded real sweet. But whe I went into the woods....pththththt!

Figuring that - the whole time I have been playing with it has been during cold wether, so my heater has been running and the humidity in my house is almost non existant.

Last night, when I came home, I worked the striker tip over a little bit and I have a fine sandpaper that I worked over the whole slate with. Little rougher than emery cloth. Maybe a 1500 grit?

This morning, it was definantly humid. Started sprinkling on us as a matter of fact.

Call sounded real nice. I can get three different sets of tones on it depending on how close to the edge I work it.

    Slate call
Amen. halleluiah, by and by to Dianne00 for standing up to HAND CRAFTSMANSHIP and GT for PRODUCING what I keep reading to be a mighty fine call. I personally have a favorite and it is a BUD and BETTY custom hand made slate call from South Carolina. Got to say I love the thing. With that said I take it to the woods with the confidence to succeed and that is the best thing I could take to the woods. Go ahead and go to Walmart guessing that the few dollars you just saved in buying a MASS MACHINE produced call that you saw on your favorite hunting show will do you justice as you saw on the show. Go ahead and sit there wondering if the fancy packaging and picture of a TV SPORTSMAN will bring ole TOM gobbler to your sit. Now if you are feeling the doubt and discomfort from reading this BEFORE the hunt then GO AND GET YOURSELF A CUSTOM HAND MADE CALL BY A PROFESSIONAL CRAFTSMAN WITH A PASSION TO PRODUCE SOMETHING HE OR SHE IS WILLING TO PUT THEIR NAME ON. I do not have that many calls because one works great for me. The reason for BUD and BETTY, well it was the first custom call I purchased. That being said, it worked and I still use it. Now let me check out this Spursuader. I wonder how fast GT could get one to me, LOL. Best of luck to all of you and I defiantly have the FEVER.

You are absolutely right huntinbucks. When someone crafts something with their hands and are confident to put their name with the product, that says a Lot about the quality of that product. When I see all these calls in Walmart with some big time tv hunters name on them I think to myself that the call must not be that great if the only way you can sell it is to have someone who has a tv show to endorse it,when the truth is they probably use a hand crafted call themselves. I do carry a box call in my bag that I bought last year, but when I'm calling one in to shoot I have only used the spursuader. I just have confidence using it because it works for me.Just like you said about your handmade call,if it works its gonna be the one you stick with.Good Luck to you I hope you tag out with a couple big'uns.

Gt, your comment has convinced me I want. . . NO. . I need a spurswader. Without one, I won't stand a chance of being successful. My address is 538 april fools drive. Seriously though, I doubt I would add your call to my lineup if it was given to me. You say China TOOK your job of 20 years lol. That is a joke. You seem to know it all GT.... And D, I don't even read your comments anymore. You are clearly biased toward the calls, and you always copy and paste some plain jane response to someones kill they posted.

You don't read my comments? well, join the club I'm sure a lot of people don't.They don't tell people when they join the forum that they have to read Diane's comments to be a member. I really see no point in attacking people or making light of the fact that someone lost their job. I think the site should be a place for people to share, comment and even disagree, but no place for personal attacks. Nobody comes on here to read stuff attacking peoples personal lives,so lets keep it enjoyable for everyone. I have had the common sense to revise my original comment to you, only because I'm a lady and care how others on here view me,so I hope in doing so you don't feel my comment was too plain jane,as you put it.

    Just an observation
    Parkerslayer, Do you fish?

    Freshwater?

    Saltwater?

I have been fishing slatwater for a long, long time on the North Carolina coast> I have fished between Southport, NC all the way up to Hampton, Va

My mom's side of the family is from Hatteras Village, Frisco, and Buxton, NC.

Spent many a summer vacations in Hatteras>

    So what is my point?
Well, if you fish, you already know even if you don't know that you know.

    Know what I mean?

Okay, I can go to the south end of Topsail Beach, NC and use a gold Hopkins spoon and catch red drum. I can get in my truck and drive 19 miles to
North Topsail Beach, and the drum won'r even give that spoon a glance much less take a bite at it.
OKay, soeand another hour and drive to Morehead City, NC> Better have some cut bait or clams.

DRive another 3 hours and a short ferry trip to Cape Hatteras. Everything you used so far to catch drum will not work cause they are not biting it.

How about trout or stripped bass?

Seems like they change there mind from day to day what they will bite>

Not sure if you ever fished on a coastal fishing pier or not, so you might not know how fish will bite on one side of the pier but not the other. They will swim around the pier instead of going under it.

Now, for the life of me, I cannot understand why a fish that might only e 1 1/2' thick cannot swim between two pilings that are 30 feet apart!

Okay, my point is this: fish act differently from one geographical area to another. THose ares can be just around the bend, or 200 miles apart.

Water temperature makes a huge difference>

Oh yeah, I have a friend at work who gave me his auto corn feeder because it was useles to him. The deer in his area wouldn't touch the corn> He bought it from local mill, from a neighbor, from Bass Pro Shop and even Tractor Supply Co.

    Nothing worked.

So he goes out and buys a bag of cobb corn and the dder eat it like it's the first meal they ever had!

So anyways, my pointy is,in the area where Gobbintom is located..the turkeys may respond to any particular sounding call better than any other call.

He mentioned that he hates a gobble call. WEll, where I am located ( 4 miles from Atlantic ocean as the crow flies) gobble calls are the cream of the crop and what the toms respond to.

Maybe in Raligh they answer to the sound of BMW's cranking up or like the smell of all the BS rolling out of the capitol building? LOL!

AS for Diane, I can't say i am much different. I don't play the brand loyalty card, but if I discover something that works, and works great....I will tell anyone and everyone about it.

Hope you bag a big one....I'm going to!

WOW? Are your sure it's PDS and Not PMS??? I don't know what tripped your trigger Kid but you need to loosen that bra strap a little or something? Did I not defend your earlier comment by saying and I qoute 'It's totally PDSs choice to spend his Money as he wishes' Un-qoute? YES I Did but I would rather watch paint dry then to worry about selling any of the calls I make. If China Calls work for you and your happy supporting that country then That's your Choice!! I simply stated and I qoute again 'I decided I wanted a Different sound'...I have also stated before that 'My Calls are not magic but they have fooled Turkeys' As far as me loosing my Job of 20 years and Me 'Knowing it all' I know that I was in the company meeting and what we was told about the over-seas competition and you wasn't!! I also stated that 'people are blind to the truth about craftsmanship' and what I meant was Places like Walmart that keep China Booming have put more people out of work in the USA than any other means...I just read in the paper that unemployment was up again last Month in all 100 Counties of NC but the same paper stated Walmart Sales are Up again...You must have got a few new Calls!!! Did you also NOT notice that last year when you killed your Number 2 Bird...I was the ONLY 1 that Commented??? Anyway Good Luck to ya and be safe...I mean that!!... NO April Fools from my end.....That's what Kids Play!!!!

Hey GT, Yes it has the square striker. I went to the mailbox today and saw a turkey cross the road about 30 yards from my house today. And when I checked the mail my Turkey Country magazine was in there. I thought man this must mean something. I hope it is good. Last week I left my driveway in my truck on my way to work and two houses up the street from mine a turkey flew across the road directly in front of me. I almost hit the bird. Talking about fever, man I am sweating. Good luck to you too brother. May the gobbles rain in all directions.

Enough of this drama already - I'd rather watch General Hospital or Desperate Housewives. I hope someone else besides me is tired of this.
Just going back and forth with this crap isn't resolving anything nor helping anyone - one comment just antagonizes the next.
Plenty of comments on other posts have not made any darn sense to me but I don't feel the need to argue everything I don't agree with. I just move along and do what works for me. Hunters from all walks need to stick together on issues that have an actual value.
Can we please move along? We're supposed to be sniping critters not each other people.
