Good morning everybody. So I was wondering if any body shoots a 20 for turkeys. I realize it may be a little under powered but I reckon IT can get the job done inside 30 yards. My son Jesse is ready to go this year and my 12 is a little to much gun I think. Im thinking a 20 guage combo bird and buck barrel will work a couple years for deer and birds and such. What do yall think?/ Yesterdays rain brought the birds into the winter wheat field ,6 jakes 1 long beard 4 hens. Cant wait to call one in for Jesse.

    Turkeys
Good Luck Guys and with the improvements in Turkey Loads in recent years...A 20 gauge will get it done just as good as a 12 in my opinion. I have seen the results from both and a 12 might up your yardage a little if any BUT Even if you don't get 1 close enough at first then that just means you get to try it again lol I'm like you guys...I'm ready!! Can't find any birds but my pal in Rockingham told me to dry my sniffles and not to worry lol.

    20 ga
hey man i bought an 870 express youth model this year and set it up for turkey. i put an hs strut choke in it and shooting the federal heavy weight no.7's and im getting an average of 50 pellets in the head at 35 yds. at 20 yds the pellets punched a hole in 3/4in plywood and it will rip a turkies head off. ill attach some pics. im convinced a 20ga is more than enough and its light weight. i doubt i will ever go back to the 12ga.

    NICE!!!
WOW mac!! That's impressive man...With a 25 like that I would say you would be safe at 35 yards also...easy!!! But who don't like to get them close!!!! lol

    no problem
My son has been using his 20 for the past few years on turkeys with no problem out to about 30 yards. He usually takes his first with the 20 and the second he hunts with a bow. Up here in the mountains several guys I know use 20's to save on weight humping around these hills. 3' turkey loads with #5 shot and a turkey tube will get it done all day. Of course I use a bow but that is a different story....

    old school
thanks for the input fellas Im still using my old deer gun for turkeys. Its a rem, 1100 12 guage I bought a 30' fixed full choke bbl and its killed many toms. never missed out to 4o yrds. Im told 12 bb;s in the head and neck will do it and it does. remington heavy shot is my choice and I love it!!

    20 gauge
I have set up my daughter with a Remington 870 youth 20 gauge. I patterned her gun @ 40 yards. I am using a Indian Creek .562 choke with Hevi 13 3' 1/1/4 oz. #7 loads. I got 154 pellets in a 10' circle at 40 yards. Which is as good as I use to get with lead #5's in with my 12 gauge. 20 gauges can greater done with the right load and choke combo.
