  • Lake Wateree Fishing Report

The best bite on Lake Wateree right now is catfish, and Capt. Rodger Taylor (803-517-7828) said the creeks are all filled with bait and are great spots to catch cats with cut gizzard shad and white perch. The unpredictable weather causes this to change daily though, so Taylor said the key to success is being flexible with the changing conditions. When the creeks aren't working, the main river channel is a good bet for large numbers of blue cats, with some in the trophy range.

The crappie fishing is fair, and the crappie are heavily concentrated between Wateree State Park and Wateree Creek. Fishing 18 feet deep in 26-30 feet of water is working well with minnows, but on warmer days, look for the fish to move much shallower.

Largemouth bass are biting slow to fair, but some good fish are being caught on jigs around main lake docks, especially ones with grass patches nearby. Look for largemouth to begin moving shallow as air and water temperatures warm, which will put bass in a much more active state. Some of the hottest bass fishing on Lake Wateree is just around the corner.
