Hey guys. New to the posting on the website. Have been enjoying reading postings for a while. I had a question for some of you.

What kind of rigs do yall use most for catfishing? I know some of you use a Carolina Rig or Santee Rig. Any Others?

Also, what bait? I've saw that you used live bait but do you ever use anything else? (chicken livers, stink bait, etc.)

    Thanks Guys!

Welcome! Fill out your profile info tell about yourself. And som
I haven't fished in a while for Catfish. But, can tell how we have done it. In the river I like to tie balloons on line above my weighted rig. Anchor out the front of boat and let balloons out down stream. I use a 18' leader and big hook and swivel with a big egg sinker and a bead. On all my rigs, whether I fish bottom, under balloons or cigar floats. Even if I am drifting!
There are several guys on here that will tell you their secrets. Gobblingtom, Tillerycat! If you click on their profile pic, you can see some of their posts from past. You can click on forums and find their posts and read. They have caught some monsters. Cut bait works good. Live works great for flathead. If I use liver or clams, I let them sit in sun for a day! But, don't if you have a weak stomach! LOL Grandpa used night crawlers and a cane pole! And filled a many a washtub! Good Luck, hope to read later of your success! ;)

CRH, Pretty much explained it...Frisky Fresh Live bait for Flatheads and chicken liver wrapped in pantyhose for Channel Cats or Fresh Cut bait...I occasionally catch a Flathead on Cut bait but the Norm for me is Big fresh bait for big Flatheads. In River I set up sideways and use Big Billy Bob Float..Let rig of 2 oz egg sinker - 8 inch leader - and - 6/0 Hook and once it hits bottom, with rod eye touching water, Drop reel in gear and tie rubber band 18 to 24 inches from Rod tip and reel up...Loop bait out and once float hits rubber band, it will drift to your ambush point...Set clicker and relax....In the Lake..I use the same rig but with 20 inch leader and No float...Just don't sling your bait like a madman because Fish don't fly and the shock will kill your bait before it hits the water...Just a little loop is all you want to have to cast a big live bait...I think i still have some Videos on here as well as Youtube...just type gobblintom in search bar to watch them...Good Luck...Here's a little Video we made last summer....You might get a idea of our set-up...If they don't bite then just go in a hand grab them lol

Try dropoffs and ledges along the main lake channel. Fresh cut bait will be your best bet. They will eat any fish that lives in the lake but white perch ( waccamore ) gizzard shad, other pan fish work good. Be patient, the bite can be a little slow at times but don't leave a spot too quick. Anchoring is what I usually do, I fish 10 rods at a time, with the santee rig, down current. Good Luck

There are not many laws that protect Trophy Catfishing, so I release all Big Cats so somebody else and maybe I can catch them again. I do keep some to eat sometimes, but nothing over 10 lbs.

Good luck when you go, I'll be fishing when the weather permits from now until next deer season. The State record Blue ( 89 lbs, Badin ) was caught a few years ago by a guy I know, he was striper fishing too.

I think it was caught at santee, I think in the santee river, not the lakes,I believe it weighed 108 when it was caught. The last time I talked to the guy at BPS that takes care of the fish , he said he thought it would go in the 120's and that was a year ago.

    Went to Tillery Sat.
Well I went to Tiller Sat. for cats but no luck. Caught plenty of baitfish but no luck with catfish. Only had one pulldown, fished from about 10am till dark.

Had one question. I caught a bunch of brim on crickets for bait and didn't know if they were too big. Do yall catch bait with a throw net and how big of bait fish do yall use?

    Cut Bait
This time of year I use all cut bait, no live bait. I've caught them on cut bream, but I'd rather have waccamore ( white perch ), gizzard shad, threadfin or herring if you can find them. Live bait will work better later on, around spring when the water starts warming back up. I like using the heads and gut pockets, the back third of the bait will work if the fish is big enough, just cut the tail off.

Dang? That sucks? Figured at least a few Channel cats?...Unlike TC, I seldom use Cut bait on Road and Reels...Like TC, White perch is my favorite because it stays frisky but I use Bream of all sizes but about hand size for the Big Bite...I hook them shallow in the Back behind dorsal Fin and will take a knife and scrape the sides a little to let more scent out...During Cold weather, I would drift Cut bait to cover more water.
