Well tomorrow is supposedly the peak of the rut .What do yall think?? Anybody been seeing any chasing by more than 1 buck? how about reckless behavior by a mature buck?? Bucks moving at mid day?? what have you seen as indicators?? I think its at least a week later.

    week later
Week later, I agree. From my part of Chatham County last Saturday saw three small bucks just wondering. Have not seen chasing or any big bucks. I think things have been hotter at night. Still wishing!

    Hey Jager
Seems like it's a little less intense this year for some reason. I'm still waiting for it to explode but have to believe maybe it really is a week off for some reason? If that's the case, maybe we'll have a longer, drawn out post rut also. I believe the biologists that the shortening of the days stimulates the does estrous but I am def. not seeing the activity I normally do by now. Good luck guys.... and don't ever give up!

Like huntinbucks stated jager, I'm thinking if any full blown Rut action is happening, It's under the cover of darkness!! Sure people say they shot a Buck chasing a doe but was he really or just seeking a companion? I think in my opinion alot of people say they shot him chasing a doe because it just sounds traditional lol It's hard to get a rutting Buck that's Hot on the heels of a Hot Doe to even slow down unless she does lol... I seen 3 Bucks this AM...Same spike i been seeing alone then a 3 pointer alone and then at 10:10 when I was fixing to climb down because of the wind and basket 6 pointer came out alone and each buck did the same thing...Eat the length of the lane and keep cruising and I'm thinking the seeking phase is going on right now myself? The 6 pointer had a little mass going on but was only bout 10/11 wide and a deer I hadn't seen before...I'm with you Guys...1 more week and it should get exciting or at least I hope it does lol...Good luck Guys

    Exactly
I'm right with GT. The main thing I havent seen is that intense chasing, right on her heels where you can scream at him and he won't even acknowledge your presence. By the way, this communication is great. Joking with ChadB on here, alot of times this time of year you go out with high hopes and second guess yourself thinkin you missed it - The ruts over!!!! Keep pluggin away and it will pay off

A Pic for ya FairChase..A few years ago, I was just day dreaming at Mid day about eating a 0.99 McNasty because I was hungry and while I was staring at this 1 area a Doe came Hauling S toward me and then another!! I was like WTH? Then a Nice Buck Came out on a mission and he was determined!!! His body made me decide to shoot so he slowed to a trot when the does did and I squeezed 1 off and he just keep going? I said No Way...I get on him again and he is still hard on the Does and again squeeze another round and he stops and just stands there...I chamber round 3 and get him in scope as he Falls over...The 2 270 round shots in both lungs almost touched but he was so Rut crazed, he didn't even act hit....That's the phase I'm waiting on lol...By the way...it was my biggest Body Buck Ever!!!!

    That's it
Great story GT and that's a great buck my man. Perfect example of a mature deer throwing caution to the wind which is what it seems like we're missin so far. Last year I had a beauty cross right in front of me at 2 p.m. Nov. 1st chasin a doe across a field edge with a button buck followin along and I don't think he ever stopped till he mounted her!

I not sure what is going on with the rut. Yesterday friend of mine killed nice buck. He said that that buck hit the field with his head up just a smelling the air. He killed him and said his neck was all swollen. This morning I was hunting and at 10, 2 buck walked out together. They were just walking together. I had a doe decoy set up and covered with doe estrus scent. They were not even interested. Also, I have had this decoy out for about a week. There is not even any fresh tracks around it.

I was muzzleloading one year before they changed the seasons in harnett county and I heard a buck grunting in a pine forest that was a plant bed at one time. Well a doe steped out and I shot her had some tinks 69 hung on a tree with the old ceramic disc the 7 point came and stuck his nise strait in it and was doing all kind of crazy things I was trying to get reloaded shaking badley finly got it done and shot the 7 and he fell right below the tinks. My brother was sitting close enough to see it all go down and he couldn't believe it.That was pure luck. But as far as the rut I think everyone is right.Killed a small one tuesday and his tarsal glands was starting to get dark and his neck was swollen. He wasn't chasin just feeding up the ridge on acorns.

    chasing
This past saturday evening around 5pm I watched a small 4pt chase a doe through the woods. And Monday evening around the same time, here came the same doe running around with her tail up with a 4pt and a small spike on her heals. As far as the big boys, I am afraid they might be working 3rd shift.

    NC Rut is very near
Hi ya all, that's my Yankee Southern talk. The big boys are getting ready to show off their stuff. I have seen this happening for the past 3 or 4 years now. This week that is approaching is when you need to be in the tree or blind, pack your lunch. I had Tuesday eve a real nice one come out in field, 5:15pm, safety off twice, could not be sure he would make the requirements for the wall, for sure he had my heart pumping. He was showing the girls that he was ready. This buck was checking each doe, pushing all his weight around. The doe's would pee, he would run up to the spot, about go crazy and check another. In the past 3 years, Thanksgiving week has been where they loose there wits. Also by the look of most of the roads they are not shy of walking out in front of cars either. The time is right, good luck to all, getchyaabigen. There I go again, northern chat, just can't help it. Good luck and God Bless.

I'm glad to hear yall are seeing the same thing. I shot a nice 8 last yr on opening afternoon of muzlldr and another decent 8 the 2nd week of mzlldr. The 1st was on the heels of 2 does, they stopped when they got downwind of me, that caused him to stop, he now lives in my foyer. The 2nd buck came up a ridge right after I hit my bleat can/grunt call. I had hoped by this time this year, I would be tagged out, but I have not seen a shooter since bow season. I'm seeing does feeding normally, have seen a few young bucks runnin does around, but the does aren't interested. I'm doin like NCfairchase said, I'm pluggin along. I think because there are so many does that the rut is very drawn out here in NC. I, like you all, are looking forward to this weekend and next week, would love to see a cold drizzly day in the forecast, but we'll make the best of what the Good Lord gives us. Good luck to everybody and thanks for the comments. Please update us when you do see some increase in rut activity

    good news
Thanks for all the input. This is my first NC rut. I Felt like I was in a rut for a month now. And like others said I was paranoid that maybe I some how missed it. I do have some small bucks on my cam now,but I havent seen or heard any chasing at all, Honestlly Ive only been a witness to a few great chase fazes of the rut and Im talking about 3 to 6 bucks all hounding the same poor doe who just happened to be the first one to come into heat a few hours or days before the rest of the other does followed suite. With that said, I now have a renewed hope that just maybe Ill get some great action after all . Keep your guard up because you just never know when its your turn to score .Good luck to all ..jager..
