Picture this, you are at a stoplight and you look over to the car next to you and there's a pretty little 6 year old girl dressed out in camo asleep in her carseat.....with a dead squirrel laying across her lap.Yeah, that was us,Gracie killed her first squirrel. She had been looking forward to this day for months, ever since I promised her we'd go squirrel hunting together.
The 'Big' hunt play by play, lol?Well,we had been watching the squirrel activity in a particular spot and my intention was to deer hunt, because this is also one of my deer spots. So I had my bow and our 'squirrel getter' gun when we went in,but after we watched for a couple of hours for the deer to come in,Gracie was getting anxious and couldn't be still. So I said are you ready to get a squirrel, and she said 'yeah',with a big smile. So I let her climb on my lap and I put the scope on one we had been watching for a while and she put her little finger on top of mine.I said when you see him in the cross hairs like we practiced, say ready. She looked and looked and said I can't see him, then she caught sight of him and hesitated a second and whispered ,'ready'.We shot.I looked up hoping she hit him and said you got him Gracie. She said ,'I did?' and took off running screaming ,'I got a squirrel,I got a squirrel.'This little girl couldn't have been prouder if she had just shot an 8 point buck, lol, and I was pretty proud myself. After I convinced her that he was really dead, she carried that squirrel all over the woods til we got back to the car. When I put it in the back she almost cried,so I let her hang onto it til we got home. It's not everyday a 6 year old girl kills her first squirrel after all, lol.
She said I wish we could hunt together everyday.I love this little girl and what great memories we are making together. She will forget a lot of things, but she will never forget how to hunt or fish.If you're too busy to take a child hunting, then you're just too busy. The memories you bring away from it will be priceless.

    Yeah Gracie!
Yeah Gracie......congrats on your squirrel. I want to tell you that was an awsome shot too. Be sure grandma skins him out and tacks him to a board so you can keep the hide.

Can't tell you Diane how this brings back memories of a room full of squirrel hides hanging on my wall. My mom hated them but, knew they were my trophies......She's probably wishing I had the squirrels still because the things on the wall now are bigger and take up a lot more room....lol!

So proud of you and the time you spend with your Gracie!

Just hope as she gets older, she doesn't have a change of heart like my daughter is getting lol We were driving the other day and a Squirrel ran out in the road and stopped and I said 'OK Rocky, Which way ya gonna go???' And for a instant I thought Dacota was gonna grab the wheel and Roll us to save it lol...Great Shot and a Plump 1 also
