Well Blah Blah Blah Guys...I'm looking for another Pity Party so PLEASE Help!! LOL But seriously, I screwed up again on a great Bow Buck in Rockingham Co. Good Buddy Don that I meet on the site here by commenting and socializing a little felt Pity for me I guess and invited me up again AFTER I goofed on the Buck with My Crossbow, Then made a bad Hit with my Buddy's Crossbow while I was waiting on my Compound, Then today I goof on another GREAT Bow buck with my compound!! BUT!!,WHAT A HUNT!! Don put me in a stand on a hardwood ridge and my Butt went to sleep about 9:30 on that little seat as I see the biggest Doe I have ever seen and after she left I decided to Climb down, I toss my Bow Case, Rattling Horns,ETC to the ground, Lower my Bow and bag and climb down. I then wait for Don. Less than 5 mins I'm sitting on ground eating a granola bar and look up and see a NICE heavy 8 pointer vacuuming up acorns at what I thought was 30 yards away, I nock arrow and draw while he's broadside and thump!!! Clean Miss, He just looks up and goes back to eating.(Bowtechs are Silent!!) I nock another arrow and Don texts me 'I'm coming out' I quickly reply 'No Wait' I then start stalking this Nice Buck in the wide open while he's eating away, The sun is directly in my face and each time his eyes are hide, I take a soft step. I lose him and thought he left so I text Don to ease on out..Then, I see the Buck over the bank eating still...I take 2 more steps to get behind a Large Oak and I hear Don behind me...I motion for him to get down low as I'm looking for the Buck again...Guys, He (The Buck) walks out of a little draw at 25 yards Broadside eating and I draw... Burpp...Take Aim...and THWACK!!! He plows forward spinning his front legs and nose plows 40 yards and stops, He's wobbling and bobbing his head up/down low like deer do before they fall and Oh No!!! he crashes down the bank with tail flickering like crazy and hitting everything it sounds like. We start a very slow search and At the spot he was at at the shot, we find my arrow Broke into 3 pieces...14+ inch with Muzzy, 6/8 inch piece and the fletching/nock end is missing...I 'Think' the arrow went through both shoulders which had him 'penned' until he broke loose, pulling arrow/Muzzy out, and the 6/8 inch piece was from between his shoulders maybe? and the fletching was still in him or we just couldn't find it. He tried to do the high leg kick also at the shot. Found little blood and chips of Bone at arrow and 2 splotches of Blood the way he went. Looked for 4 hours and nothing else but area is THICK...What do you guys think? I'm not gonna make excuses about my shot because It felt good and I was fairly calm. How many chances can a guy get? lol Been my Best archery season ever as far as getting chances but I keep screwing up somehow and I was shooting those Muzzys like darts!! On the way to the house here, From Rockingham, I kept playing it Back and Hope I just didn't break both front legs... Anyway, Sorry for another 'Book' but wanted to at least share the awesome Hunt even though the outcome sucked. Don even put me in another stand this evening where I seen a yearling and a Very small 6 pointer, a twin to the 1 in the pic here but he was safe around me because...I'm looking for something that is more CONTEST grade!!! besides, I need to shoot more and figure out whats going on...Btw, You Guys that shoot RAGE, How do they Fly compared to your Field points and Thanks!! Well Thanks for reading and please send all confidence Boosters to my FaceBook Page or Tweet me? Whatever that means LOL...Good Luck Everyone!!! We think that this is a early trail cam Pic of the 8 I took the shot on today.

I would have to say, from what you described after you shot, that he is probabley laying somewhere in that thick stuff waiting on the buzzards. Bone fragments probably filled in the holes and thats why there wasn't that much blood. I would imagine at 25 yards with a muzzy and if it was a shoulder shot, they will go through. I have done it and man it is a pain trying to find them after that, a buck anyway. If I was you and you could I would head back out there tomorrow and look again, you may have pushed him a little also. Wish you had your camera on this one, would love to see where it hit, but I would say shoulder. He didn't step forward or anything when you shot did he? couldn't imagine it being a ham shot. FaceBook and Twitter....lol thats all Im saying. Maybe you will get another shot, good luck and don't give up.

    Thanks
Thanks Earlyriser and I know it wasn't a Ham shot, He was Hurt in the front end and plowing!! You mention Camera and Man, I could have got some AWESOME footage of him but with the shock of him feeding around me on the ground and the adrenaline..The camera didn't even cross my mind...I Did get some awesome footage of a Big Doe walking up the middle of a creek while I was searching for him...We are going back Tuesday to look I'm thinking and like I told Don, He was looking at me at the shot and I remember seeing his whole Body Muscles jolt at the shot like he was gonna duck but how I goofed on such a shot is beyond me and I prayed all morning that if I had a opportunity, Please let me make a ethical Hit and I goofed again..dang it!!!!!

    Dang it
Yea the camera probabley wouldn't have been on my mind either. But for the arrow to be broke like that it had to hit something hard. Man I wish i could go help you look, I have a nack for finding deer like that, friends call me a bloodhound sometimes, lol. I Hope you find him or at least get to try another one. We all goof up, I've done it and Im pretty sure everyone on this site has, it's just some people can't talk about it or are ashamed of it. I rather talk about it and try to get some input and stuff on what I did wrong or other stuff. But guess its back to work, have a good one man and I really hope you find him.

Thanks again Buddy and your right, I know people that swear they Never miss and I simply say...Well you've never hunted!!! I have seen Muzzy heads do some remarkable damage to Bone and I hope I do find him...This velvet Trail Cam pic doesn't do him Justice...he's Not wide but he was heavy and seemed perfectly symetrical.

    bad luck!!
Gt... That definitely sucks dude. Don needs to make you pass a achery skill shooting test before you go back. Lol.. just kidding.. That really sucks man. To be so lucky that he comes in after you had climbed down and to get a shot. I can imagine the adrenaline pumping. Do You know how unlikely it is for that to happen. I hate it for you GT and Don. What a rush that could have been. It sounds like the Yotes will get him. Maybe Don can find him when the birds circle. Hang in there man. Enough with the bad luck. I think Diane has put a Hex or spell on you for those fishing wise cracks and kitchen jokes... lol..

No hex or spells from me.I'm afraid to even make a sly comment ,afraid my next shot will be bad, lol. But I do remember the start of archery season when 'someone' asked,'do you think Diane could even hit a deer with a bow'.hmmm.Mines in the freezer, lol.
Really,I am sorry you couldn't find him.Maybe your luck will be better in Anson.I know it's frustrating.

GT I got 1 question. I now the woods are different down where I am. Being all thick and stuff. But how do you put on a stalk at 30yrds????lol You should have thrown your pocket knife at him lol. But Im sorry to hear that ending but the hunt sounds great. And on the Rage question. Me best friend and hunting buddy bow hunts all year and has tried all kinds of broadheads and has been hooked on rage for about 3 years. He says they are the best he as every shot and the hole is like nothing I have ever seen. And I was in the woods yesterday evening for the 1st day of gun and I saw no deer but had this little fella on my corn for about 30mins at about 35yrds and it was pretty cool.

    The goof up
Guys, Again... what a hunt it was..I simply cannot believe how the stalk took place, I mean..This was wide open Virgin timber Oak Flat and I wasn't even wearing a face-mask because like I said, I was just waiting on Don after climbing down and gathering my stuff and here he is feeding around me...Unbelievable!!! I only stalked closer when he had his head down and I bet I softly said a Thousands times that 'This can't be happening!!!' And then to get the shot I did was crazy with Don behind me watching all this!!! WOW!!!

Tagone, LMBO...I might need a archery lesson but in my defense, I have been shooting this morning dressed the same and twice my string brushed my Scent-lok jacket and veered my arrow to the left but I dont recall that happening when I shot but who knows?

Diane, You got me Girl so I'll asked ya that since your Sooo Good in the Kitchen, What goes Good with CROW when you have to eat it??? LOL

Thanks NCDC, I think I'm going with rage next season but still yet, I have killed alot of Deer with a Bow and Muzzy heads but this year I just can't get the arrow where it needs to be but Thanks Buddy and I hope it does Turn around for me and everyone else that is having a crappy season.

Antnee, Like I said Buddy, this Hunt has got to be in the Top 2 ever for me the way it happened in open timber...Freaking AWESOME!!! I still can't believe it. I only wish the outcome would have been better...Cool Bear btw

    Broken Leg
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on here GT but, I've been hunting trying to get a second after losing the first 2. Rage 2 blade chisel tip......wicked. It broke back leg in half cut the front leg off and put a 2 inch gap in her neck. Blades still good and still using it. There's your Rage review.

As far as that buck.....you shot low and broke his leg. As many deer as I have cleaned, I have never seen a bone in the shoulder of a deer.....it's all cartilage. Low leg.....bone....isn't gonna give good blood either. Just my 2 cents! A buck that big will survive that shot! Keep watching the cameras.

Shake it off and get practicing.

    BONES
Hey Viper, I would have to question you on that.
No bone in the shoulder? You had to mean something else, because there is cartlidge and there is a scapula (shoulder blade) and a bone that runs through it also. Well in GT's case there was a bone in there, but not anymore...lol just messing. Its not a big bone but it will break an arrow. I mean think about it, a deer is kinda built like us if we where walking on all fours. But i guess it could have been a leg shot also the way he described him nose diving. Would have worked out better for the buck cause he could mostly likely survive that. I shot one 2 years ago with the 270 and the bullet grazed his neck, basically cutting is throat. That when i relized my scope was off..lol. Couldn't find any blood. Went back 2 weeks later to hunt and he come out in the same spot and when I grunted and he looked to where I was I saw a big black spot on his neck, but this time I got him. I think ganggreen (whatever its called) already started setting in though so he probably wouldn't have made it much longer. Its amazing how tuff they.
    I guess I started a book too...lol.

    Bad luck GT
Sorry to hear about that.I have to agree with Viper on this.I shot a doe around 30+ yds. While the arrow was half way there i seen it make a dip(found out later it had hit one of them twirly little vines that hang of big grape vines)when it hit the doe,she went down in the frontend kick with her hind legs about 5 yards, got up went on down though the woods.I found the back half of the arrow and bone fragments, went on about 10 more yds,the front with head. The slots in the head had bone marrow in it.It was a little blood there & when i started tracking her she had blood in the track on the side the arrow went in.she was stumble at first than smooth out favoring the arrow entry leg.Ather a bit i seen her standing in a biar thickit licking her leg.She was so busy doing that i was able to ease up & put a arrow where it should go.Later i seen where the 1 arrow went thru the shoulder, but since it was on a down hill slant due to the grape vine it miss the brisket and struck in the far leg.In your case thr arrow went thu the leg bone and into the chest the far leg, that muzzy is going do damage in the chest.I don't think that buck is going to live.I hate you lost the meat, but i think ya'll get the rack tue.Good luck on the next hunt. You hunt enough its happens to all of us.I could tell some stories lol.them bucks are tougher than people thank.Sorry about geting long winded on here.Look for the buz.and stay down wind from where you thank he at.Good luck on finding him!!

    We all screw up.
Hey buddy, crap happens. Fixed blades, mechanical blades, whatever. I have seen a 12 gauge slug, and a 308 180 gr take them down hard, only to find that he was able to get up and run, never to be found. The most important part is that you put 110% in looking, the recovery, don't give up to early. Look at it this way, if he is dead, there are many critters that will dispose of him, even the mice will have a feast. Man, we all do it, for sure I can tell you I did. Kept me awake many nights. I find it amazing how the desire to get that big buck skews our ability to think straight more often than not. Concentrate on shot placement, squeeze softly, and pray for a quick recovery. Get in a tree and hunt, your next trophy is on its way.

Thanks Guys and like I said I dressed the same and was shooting My Bow and twice my string hit my Sleeve of my jacket and my arrow hit left which might be what happened because the Buck was walking right to left when I shot but who knows? I did get some 2 inch Rage heads last night and using the headlights of my truck, I was shooting the practice Head and it was dead Nuts each time so maybe they will fly better. I drew on a Doe this morning at 18 yards but a little voice was telling me 'Here we go again' so I let down and let them walk off...Guess I'm just scared now of losing anymore.

Sorry to hear that GT. I think you'll be pleased with those RAGE 2 blades. I just made the switch and am glad I did. I finally got my first bow kill of the season and it was a nice 8 pointer. I'll be posting the pics and story soon after finishing this paper for school lol. To everyone having a rough season, I hope your luck turns around.

    Anatomy
@Earlyriser......lol. Thanks for the anatomy lesson. The scapula to me is more like cartilage or a thick paper plate. The only bone that I think would leave bone chips from a shot are the harder rounder bones as you can see in this picture they are out of the vitals area and way low and forward. That's what I was referring to as low leg and not shoulder shot. But you're right.

I still feel that this is not a deadly wound on this deer based on what GT is saying. As previously said...it's amazing how tough a deer is and the bigger the tougher. I once shot a deer that had a fused front knee joint and the calcium build up made it the size of a soft ball. I shot the poor deer. You could tell he was not doing well (poor quality of life)and according to the owner of the land he had been that way for 2 years.

It would be interesting to see GT's deer show up on camera again. Hang in there GT......and get practicing. I know you hate me to say it but, practice long and you will be better up close. P.S. quit looking at the horns!lol!

    Bummer
That is a bummer GT....I know you are heart broken at another missed opportunity. All we can do is practice for that moment over and over...However we all know that moment of truth is one of the most intense moments you will ever face....Some those moments we will conquer and some we will not...The only way to go i up my friend and we are both at the bottom....Good luck your next time out!!

Hey Viper, I like that pic, better then the ones I could find. You don't have one or no where to look at one like that of a hog do you? I went back and read you post again, I guess I see what you mean by lower leg. Yea maybe that buck will make it and GT will get another shot on him, I hope he does and seals the deal this time.
