  • Slugs or Buckshot?

I'm using a 12 gauge smooth barrel shotgun with just a bead on the end of the barrel. Most of my shots will be 50 yards or less due to how thick the woods are. My question is do I use slugs if so what kind, or do I use buck shot if so what kind?

Can't go wrong with Winchester Super X. Is it a fixed full choke bird barrel? Not good for slugs. Of course, buckshot can pretty much hit the deer just about anywhere on the body, which in my opinion isn't a good thing either. I'd get a slug barrel and just shoot slugs.

IMO - I'd say go with slugs. You don't have to have a slug barrell - you just need to buy rifled slugs. They have rifling grooves on them and any brand will do. My son started out shooting slugs in a smooth 20 gauge in 60 yds or less and he was knock 'em down. I really don't like the buckshot (still/stand hunting) because it ain't no telling how far that deer would go and that would make recovery more difficult. The slugs out of the 20ga slammed 'em and they never went far.
    Good luck to you buddy.

Chevyman...I with the other guys. The rifled slugs are the way to go. IMHO.. I believe slugs are going to have a devastating resuts. In my early days I had several no recovery's with buckshot. Just not for me. However, I know a lot of people shoot buckshot with good results. Saw pics of a young kids first kill yesterday with buckshot. Dropped him in his tracks. Like Jager said full choke not suppose to be good for slugs.
Shoot both at the same distance and see which results you like best. Good luck!!

Chevyman, Like the others stated..I wouldn't shoot Slugs in a Full choke..I have seen them ruin barrels!! If my shots were that close and less than 100 then for the price of a Slug barrel I would get a used 30/30 Rifle...They are the Best Brush and tight quarters Gun in my opinion.

I would use 00buck,I used it for years before I had a rifle and had one deer go more than 20 yards after i shot, most would fall in there tracks.

    00 Buckshot
In Eastern NC, some people run deer with dogs. I got introduced to using 00 buckshot as a member of one of the clubs, that's all that was allowed. It does the trick! Because we were shooting at Running targets.

My daughter is a new hunter, and maybe a little too shakey, so I let her use 00 buck, and she's done well.

A friend of mine bought a shotgun called a Maverick. I think its a Mossburg but not sure. He shoots the Federal sabot slugs through it and it is deadly. I was standing on the ground under his stand once waiting for him to come down to go get lunch when a deer came running through the woods. Bob whistled the deer stopped about 60 yds shot was fired. Dead deer. Those hoolow point sabot slugs are awesome. Not sure of the range but I know 60 yds they are good! Hope this helps.

Most of the deer I have killed have been with a smooth bore shotgun and slugs. Improved cylinder is what choke you need to use to avoid damage. My only suggestion would be to have iron sights on the barrel. The bead works great for buckshot but having a exact point of aim with a slug is key. Good luck!!
