“The stripers on Lake Hartwell have started schooling on top down by the dam, but they have not started up river yet,” said Jon at the Bait Shop in Anderson.

These schooling fish are hitting various Sammys and Spooks worked on top. Usually they will hit anything on top, but if they don’t, change the size of the lure to match the bait that they are feeding on.

The stripers are suspended around Carters Ferry, Long Point, and Sadlers Creek in 60 to 80 feet of water over the top of trees. Anglers are catching them on down rods using live herring.

Some anglers are still catching stripers on lead core line. They are trolling 1 oz. bucktails and roadrunners with green or chartreuse trailers, or green Flex It spoons.

Even though these fish are still congregated down by the dam, Jon says with a good cold snap these fish should start moving back up river, which could be next week. Get ready!
