well since we got the peanut gallery of haters lettin the opinions loose, i reckon ill be the first to stand up for folks that do run dogs. now i bowhunt an put in my share of time in a stand with a rifle, but i do run dogs right much. you dont like it? thats fine an dandy, but i dont kno many folk that caint shoot a deer on a corn pile. when you can stretch a buck out with a dog that you wouldnt never seen still huntin with him givin it everything hes got, straight up haulin ass, an you can shoot em, then your doin something. thats all im sayin.

Hey NCDC, How you doing? I was wondering about you and Man, We can have a decent discussion about who likes hound hunting and who don't without bashing each other with name Calling like Peanut Gallery of haters OK? I know alot of people LOVE to run dogs just like alot of people like other methods and I Have tried it (Hound Hunting) once with some co-workers and it wasn't for me...Call me a Pansy but I felt Sorry for what those Deer went through that day..Looked more like a Blood sport and who had the Best Dogs and toughest vehicle to me but Again...That's just my opinion and It's not fair for you too say that your hunting deer that you would otherwise never see because you don't know that for sure if the only chance you give them is running for their lives in front of hounds. Sorry but just didn't seem Fair to the deer to me. I myself would rather enjoy my surroundings on stand and Hope I'm blessed with a few deer rather than have a Dog do my work for me but again..That's just my opinion, Just like your Opinion is Your all for it But lets get along OK? I knew this post would make you for 1 red but It's not Fair to Pull every Post that some don't agree with because we all are entitled to our opinion...Good Luck to ya and Stay in touch.

    DonÂ’t get me started!!
I really dislike dog hunting myself and I killed my first deer in front of dogs and many after. Hats until I started still hunting. I don’t.t get to hunt like I did before my little girl came along and my wife went back to get her master’s degree and I hate it when dogs mess my hunt up. I wish it was not allowed. I have eaten deer that have run by dogs and they do not taste the same and 15 min after you shoot them they are stiff as a board. When I still hunt after the bow season I don’t bait much after accept 2 stands at the house. Monday I had deer dogs running all around me and I was ticked off to say the least. If you like to shoot at something that is “straight up haulin ass” than that’s fine try duck hunting. When you are running dogs you can’t judge deer’s age size if does and yearlings. More deer are wounded and suffer because the deer are “straight up haulin ass” and you can’t make ethical decisions. A dogs hunter gets tunnel vision and is not paying attention to what is behind the deer and I know for a fact truck, houses, and people have close calls> I know this for sure. I have a friend his neighbor’s house was shot. My wife’s dad shot some ones truck and I have had shoot come within 10 feet of me. When you turn dogs lose you are affecting other hunters around you and yall don’t care. I know this because when I tell people your dogs where running on my land/hunting lease there response is always the same “Dogs can’t read no trespassing sings” sorry to say this but if you as a dog hunter ever say this you are just as stupid as that dog you are running.

NCDC,I understand that some areas are just to thick to hunt without dawgs its just not for me.And for hunting over corn yes it gives me more chances to see deer but i dont have to shoot everyone i see. BTW who cant shoot a deer runnin by at 10 or 20 yards with buckshot.I hunted one mornin and the guys on the next property were runnin dawgs,a doe came by me with her whole back leg blew off from being shot.I had to shoot her to put her out of her missery.Atleast hunting over corn i can take time to make an ethical shot. But thats my 2 cents.you have yours over corn i have mine over dawgs.

    Dog Hunting
I say each to their own. I too shot my first deer (doe) in front of dogs at age 12 or 13. I blew her hams off with buckshot and then the group made me walk back to the truck to get a .22 caliber pistol to finish her off. When I got back she had drug herself about 75 yards.....not a pretty site. I was done with dog hunting.

However, I have friends that dog hunt and are actually creative. I.E. No shots fired in this block of woods, doe only days. The thing is they lease a large area of land that allows them to contain their dogs. The unfortunate thing is most clubs can't afford large tracts of land which leads to dogs not being contained and infringing on other hunters rights and leases.

I wish there was an easy answer to fix it so it worked for everyone but the fact is dog hunting deer is going by the wayside faster than people think. 8 years ago in NC the places you couldn't run dogs was 3 or 4 counties towards the mountains. Now 3/4 of the state disallows dog hunting. And 90 percent of the USA disallows it.

Enjoy dog hunting while you can and everyone try to be considerate of others. Hey one up note on dog hunting.....it got me deer hunting and I'm sure many others as a youth. We all start somewhere! IMO.

first of all,GT im doin good bo. hope you are. i been busy with work an in a tree every chance i get. an i aint got red or upset or nothin. was just voicin my opinion as were yall bout not likin it. i honestly could careless who likes it or who dont. thats just fine. but i meant nothin negative toward anybody with anything i said. hate ya took it that way.

oh an i aint talkin shootin em with buckshot at 15 or 20 yds. you can cancel them ones on the spot. im talkin shootin one bout 250 300 yds thats dippin. round here theres alotta open fields an you can shoot a rifle dog huntin. theres alotta ppl that dont like it round here too. but when you got 5 or 6 of the farmers an land owners who own the land huntin with you there aint much anybody can say bout it. the folks i hunt with dont tear other folks mess up an dont have to worry bout dogs actin a fool. they got their mess together.

but anywaysssss. good luck to everybody. stay safe.

@jager dog season stars when rifle season does but people can still run their dogs year around.

I was going to keep my mouth shut on this but after reading more comments I couldnt.

@viper you are right dog hunting is going away because there is not enough land for it just like in my opinion all hunting eventually will.

@ redneck how would you know a deer cant be hit at 2o yards with buckshot if youve never did it. You are right about we need to stick together though.

@ mps hunter, If you ever hunted with any dog hunters with any sense you would know that not all dog hunters have tunnel vision and shoot things, there are still hunters who dont need to be in the woods either. You would also know that not all dog hunters are gonna shoot everything they see such as does and small bucks.

@ GT as you said we all are entitled to our opinion and I know I propably want chaang your mind but consider this; A deer coming to a corn pile with a someone shooting it with a rifle and a deer being run with dogs, what deer propably has a better chance. Also you have said in the past that you used to coon hunt with dogs, my question is what is the big difference in coon hunting with dog and deer hunting.

@ Nobody in particular, As far as feeling sorry for the dogs that is what they are breed to do and love And as far as people saying the dogs do all the work my answer always is you dont know a damn thing about dog hunting because the dog doesnt just run em straght to you you actually have to move. Give it a try and if you never have you cant complain cause you dont no what the hell you are talking about. Also there are mant=y people who dog hunt who could care less about killing a deer all they want to do is hear the dogs run and have a good time and that is what its all about aint it a good time.

@ outdoorlife By the way dog season opens during bow season on my land. Actually Im just venting. I have 3 dogs myself and love em all but I also make sure they dont leave my property. Its not respectful to those who dont want them there. I wish all dog owners shared this mutual respect ..jager...Dont shoot at running deer!!!!!!

@outdoor life, Hope you been doing OK and Yes we used to Coon hunt like Mad Men but it was during the night and it didn't bother any Deer Hunters Remember This was in WVa where the Rifle season is only 2 weeks long But yeah, I have never heard a Deer Hunter in West V complaining about Dog Hunters messing up a Deer Hunt...Do Dogs still run Deer? You betcha but It's NOT the Dogs fault...They are just being Dogs!! The Fur-Bearer that we Coon hunted with had a solution for his dogs and that was this...He would Put any Dog that cut a Deer trail and Put that particular Dog in a 30 Gallon drum with a fresh Deer Hide and place the Lid on it and Roll him down the bank...I assure you after this, That Dog wouldn't ever think about chasing another Deer But your opinions are welcome like every ones are but we as Sportsman don't need to get in a Pissing contest over such nonsense...Everyone is still gonna do what they want right? Right!! We are all human and it's just like Fishing...Everyone has thier way Just like some people Like Fords and others Chevy's and so on...We are all Human...Lets act like it!!!!

Why did you automatically assume it was deer dogs?? Was it even deer dogs or just some near by neighbors dogs that they dont keep put up an let run loose cause hell I've to deal with that every year an I live in a county with no dog hunting

I've seen some nice bucks killed from running dogs but I don't enjoy it as much as bowhunting. I love being 'up close' a lot of guys kill deer they probably didn't want to shoot because all they see is horns running by very fast. To each his own! Dog hunting and killing a trophy buck is more pure luck then anything.
