I Pass!! lol There are enough petitions and politics in this world to start with...We are over-run with Deer and when it gets to the point where everyone wants a petition signed to shoot only certain size Deer Well....You guys can have my Part!!! Deer hunting should be Fun and a relaxing pastime, NOT some kind of Contest as to who can Kill the biggest Deer! What happened to just Good ol Deer Hunting when size didn't matter and you felt blessed with whatever Deer you took? That's the way I was raised to just Deer hunt and enjoy life without all the Bashing and Competition aspects of it like it has become. Who gives a Damn what anyone else Kills? I sure Don't!! I just enjoy my trips afield and how can I do that if I'm worried if my Deer is gonna 'Make the Cut' or if it's gonna be the smallest Deer killed that week...As I have said a Million times...When I'm there and it's MY hunt and just me and the deer...It's 110% my choice to take it's life or not and I like deer meat so I guess it really depends on how much freezer room I have. Deer hunting and all the T.V. Wanna-Be hunters are really starting to make me sick....Seen a Guy in Walmart with a great Big Buck on his shirt and it read 'SIZE MATTERS'...Whatever!!! I think the guys wear those shirts because they are talking about EGOS!!!!!!!!

Think think about this. there is an estimated population of 1,000,000 whietail in Nc and the annual number of hunting licenses sold is 199,000. that averages out to 5 deer to a hunter.......... now we all know we get six tags so do they math an you will realize they want all deer dead in NC. Overpopulated maybe but more like the ratio of bucks to does is off. I'm 38 an can remember when there were no deer hardly in my area so is this the type of good ole hunting you are refering too
    Reply
    Really?
Out of 199,000 hunters you know full well that there are several who don't even get a deer, much less 5.You should be thankful for the opportunity to hunt and be your own judge on whether the size is big enough for you or how many tags you use.I myself love being outdoors and I love hunting.Being able to outsmart an animal in their own habitat, thats what its all about. Not whether my deer is going to be bigger than all the other posters. And I respect the animal that I kill enough to use every part of that animal I can and not waste anything.I guess this will be argued to death,I don't know why it keeps coming up.

    Hunting
I pass most bucks i see during hunting season but thats my choice. I want to be able to kill 2 bucks a year because there have been times i have had more than 1 what i consider a shooter on cam. If all i had to hunt was small bucks believe me thats what i would be hunting. Hunting is a maturing process that takes time as i look at my wall with my first buck being a 2.5yo 8pt second being 3.5 yo 10 and my thrid being at least a 4.5yo 8. I love hunting more than anybody and i also put more work in to it then anyone else i know also but i dont want my second buck tag taken away to improve hunting in nc because i think im doing my part. I would love to have bucks like creek get to hunt in Kansas here in nc and on the places i hunt i try to micro manage things and sometimes works and sometimes dont. For (me) i dont see where this would help any. For example va gives 3 buck tags and if u look in b&c va is killing nc in that department. Leave it like it is and let the hunter choose what a shooter is to him. Just hope as hunters we all mature to a point where we pass the younger bucks and shoot a doe!

The Ratio is off because of the Wanna-Be T.V. hunters I spoke of being too proud to shoot does because they are worried about what their friends will think. The population has nothing to do with the number of hunters in my opinion, It's urban sprawl!!! which in return takes away the habitat for the wildlife!! They are so many deer now because of tree Huggers and housing developments going up everywhere that The Deer are forced to live in such areas where hunting is NOT allowed and just because they can't be shot in someones flower bed doesn't mean that breeding isn't still going on!!! You can empty trash at the Quickie Burger and know that!!!! So what everyone can Kill 6 deer with the option of more tags? It's NOT working!!! The good ol days I spoke of are not that long ago. It's more of a competition these days among hunters and That along with the other things I mentioned that are making the population problem what it is and now you want a better Deer in NC petition signed??? WTH?? is wrong with people??? If people would just hunt and enjoy the outdoors and not worry about what so&so killed then it would help but with the Tree-Huggers and all the Farm land being built up with housing and land leases getting crazier every year, What do you expect is gonna happen??? You hunt your parents place but what if you was forced to pay $1000 or More just to have access to a parcel of land...Your opinion would be different I'm sure about whats going to be Big enough and eat the same...I'm on the Brink of just leaving this whole site among others for issues like this...I'm not in no damn competition as to what size or How many deer I kill!!! I like to talk Hunting and share success but when my views are going to be compared to some punk on T.V. with unlimited access to whereever he chooses to hunt then like I stated before...You guys can have my part!!!!!!!! And GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I am new to the site, but i believe the trophy is in the eyes of the beholder. I have 3 boys two of which are old enough to hunt with me. Think about if they could only kill a buck with 8 points or 14' wide. I only take mature bucks now by choice and 1 day they will also. It wouldnt take long and they would be done with hunting. We take does every year and they have learned threw TV SHOWS that it is nescessary to do so, so dont be quick to knock the tv guy's GT i think there is alot of good coming out of it. When they were little thats all they wanted to watch untill they become old enough to go with me. The only petition i would sign would be to take 2 does to every buck, or atleast have to kill a doe before harvesting a buck!

Welcome, Southeasthunter and Thanks for dropping in. I agree to a degree that there is some good in the shows also....If your Rich!! ...I have meet Michael Waddell, Lee & Tiffany, Jim Shockey, Greg Miller, Ralph & Vickie among others and I consider them celebrities and Nothing More. Anybody can become a professional hunter if you are put in front of a camera where mega-Bucks are walking all around you. I mean seriously, Does anyone think that any of the TV guys can hunt my Places and kill Big Bucks every sit? You got to hunt where the Big deer are..You know...The places like they do where they put the Guide Info and Contacts at the end of the show. I'm just a Blue collar Hunter and Don't run out and buy items because I seen the TV Guys on TV use them and killed a Big deer. If you have watched as many Hunting shows as I have, You would know like I do that it's not all 100% Honest...I seen a Realtree Video once where a Big Buck was shot on film and then a Few years later on a 'Bloopers' Video, There was the same scene showing the arrow falling off the rest at draw..This explains the 'Arrow release' that was edited in...The Buck Crashing off was the Exact Scene...Another Video I seen a Big name TV Guy on stand with a solid limb Bow...Big Buck shows up and Thwack!! He shoots WITH A SPLIT LIMB BOW!!!!' Then as he is recovering the Buck he has the Solid limb Bow again!!! Explain that! Just like on the Paid TV Hunts. In my opinion, When the Deer get shot in the Hams, Guts but he falls within view of the camera, we are suppose to be gullible enough to NOT think they Edited the rifle finishing shot off to make the Pro look good or make for a great hunting show..That's just my opinion but anyone that has spent much time hunting knows that IT'S NOT like they show on TV!!! Just like the Magazines...Flip through half of the magazine seeing what the TV Pros use to finally get to a 1 Page article about deer and it's usually about a Deer far away from me...I don't get caught up in that Crap anymore...I just hunt and get me some meat and if he has a Nice Rack i consider it a blessed day but i would never ever pay to kill deer under what they Call fair Chase...OK for example.. The Drury Brothers...Kill Monsters every year and make multiple Videos...Ever seen there name in the record Books???? NO and There's a reason for that!! I'm gonna hunt the way i always have and don't really care about what people think of how I do it...I'm not trying to impress anyone!! I just like to hunt and share Gods creation with my fellow sportsman but in recent years with reality hunting shows from People like The Wildgame Clan or the Duck Commander Clan wasting thousands of Dollars..It's pretty stupid in my opinion but then again...With all thier followers that Buy into thier TV Crap..they can afford to waste their Money...Because Their next episode, they will have new Funds pouring in...Thanks for Posting and Good Luck to You and your children.

I respect your opinion and agree the ratio is off in alot of places. I hunt a farm with 2 other guy's and in the beginning we were excited because we always had 5-10 does out everyday at all stand locations but hardly any bucks. A couple years ago we made a commitment to take more does and man we have doubled the amount of bucks seen and taken because of this. You got to make them work for the does! Get them on their feet. Make them feel like if they wait until dark it will be too late. Think about it if we had 10 women outside our door all the time we wouldnt leave the house either.

Hey GT sorry didnt see you had posted while i was replying to BearIce. Thanks for welcoming me, your like a celebrity on here man. I agree with what you are saying and i too would never pay for a hunt. I was just saying that they do occasionly shoot does on tv and talk about management, its not all just big bucks. I enjoy my time afield just like you and if my boys want to take a deer we see while hunting i let them regardless of size! Its all about the hunt and time with family & friends with me too! Goodluck this season.

That's 'just about' Exactly my point...Everyone doesn't have this option (Farm land) and most that do have had 'Get a Buck!!!' beat into their head and are too proud to shoot a Doe...I invite you to go back in the forums at your convenience and read on...my friend...This comes up all the time and to be honest, More times than necessary because I agree with the 'To each, Their own' and we should all just share our passion for hunting because someone is Always gonna have a better place to hunt with Better Deer...That's just the way it is...I have heard with my OWN ears people saying things like...I had 9 Does in on me and then here comes this 4 pointer and I busted his S!!!' That's what's wrong with the Ratio!! I see people every year rattling and Roaring while hunting...WHY???? Because they seen it on TV, That's why, and like you just said...A Buck is Not gonna leave 5 Does in the Brush for 1 that is Bleating 20 foot up a tree.... We could talk until we are Blue in the face about whats Right and wrong but I'm gonna choose Not too...I wish you success this year as I do everyone!!!

Gt I agree leave the politics out of it thats the whole point of hunting in my opinion to have a good time and get away from that kind stuff. The way Im look at it if a man/women buys their lisence or are on their own land and are legal hunters they have the right to shoot what they please (TO EACH THEIR OWN). Also Gt mentioned paying to hunt and theres nothing wrong with that but it looks like in the near future if anybodys gonna hunt they will have to pay to have somwhere to go and thats 100% BS to me.

    Welcome to the forums SoutheastHunter!!

Well said about the buck not leaving the house...

I for one and not going to shoot a young buck unless it is crippled and I want to put it out of it's misery...I am after a mature buck with a nice rack...That is my choice. I will shoot does all day long because I am overrun with does. I am 110% against making somebody shoot a certain size deer...If it is your spot and you want to take a small buck then so be it...I am happy for you and will celebrate with you...It's all in the eyes of the beholder and what their goals are...Just b/c someone says they want better deer doesn't mean we should get mad b/c 'we' think they are pointing fingers at people that are not in it for those things.....To each their own...I would like to see better deer ratio numbers around home....I would love to see bucks chasing does all over the place but it is just not reality here...Until everybody as a whole has the same goal in mind, it is really not going to change....That is fine b/c I would rather be hunting and sharing stories with everybody for any successful hunts...We need to bring our #'s up not push people away b/c we are trying to make NC something it's not...I am not saying it cannot improve but it as long as everyone is having fun and doing what they love then why change it....If you have a big farm or a group of guys that have adjoining tracts then you can manage the herd better so to speak but that is rare to have these days...One day I hope I have 500-600 Ac that we can strictly manage and get that ratio down and improve the age structure...That is my goal though..not everyone else...That being said we should all respect each other goals and accomplishments whether it's that giant buck or that little 4 pointer....

Oh and I have learned quite a bit from TV Shows....Most of them our lame and nothing but advertising...but there are a few good ones with a wealth of information....It is definitely not as easy as they make it look but some of them do not fly from outfitter to outfitter...some of them actually mostly hunt their own ground which I have respect for...It does help that they live in the big buck capitals of the world but you still have to be smart and play your cards right...

    No thanks!!
As much as I would like to think this 'petition' would fix all of our problems I would never even think about signing off on it...The problem lies within hunters not doing a couple common practices. My biggest reason is because I am a meat hunter and archery only at that. Which means when we are three weeks from season close and I have yet to put any meat in the freezer the first scrub buck that walks out is going in the freezer. Now This is something I would normally complain about because hunters do not let the bucks grow up and get big, but If I have some meat in the freezer anything younger than 4 years is going to walk and sometimes older than that depending on their size.

You want more quality bucks you have to make them! You yourself!! Don't fold to the mindset of well if I don't shoot it someone else will!! Then you just became part of the problem. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose...I watched a decent 8 pointer all last year and let him walk on two occasions. One day watched him walk away and BOOOOOOOM!!!! Someone had poached him off the back of the property. I lost but guess what I did my part of trying to let them grow and I feel certain that I will get my chance on a big one some day because of it.

    You want bigger bucks?
Kill as many doe as you can...
    Eliminate any scrubby bucks(Bad genes)
Don't be afraid to let the ones who are bigger than what you have seen all season walk by.
Talk to the hunters that are hunting around you and see if you can get them all on the same page with you...
If everyone is just sitting over fields blowing up everything that steps out then hit the thick stuff and wait it out.

Remember the big ones aren't stupid they're rarely going to walk out into a field where WWII is going on. Which means hit the thick stuff/creek bottoms.

I haven't been hunting but a few years but I have done a ton of homework and put in my hours and it's starting to pay off...I went form thinking that our property was home to only scrubby 4 pointers because I only hunted the easy places to hunt and last year started doing the leg work and found myself sitting in front of some big deer that I had no idea were there.

So therefore the problem may not be any of those I stated above but be that maybe you're a lazy hunter like I was and that's why you THINK there are no decent bucks around!!

Glad to see everybody has their own management plan. i know that not everybody sees eye to eye on things but we all share the same passion. i do urge y'all to attend the NCWRC meetings and start putting some input in their ear of what hunters want. and look at the 2013-14 rules that they want to pass especially H19 an 20. it could effect alot of people an not in a good way in my opinion

    In my Opinion
I agree with you 100% GT. In the past three years I have killed 3 bucks and 5 does, and the ratio seems to sort itself out here somehow. I see about an even amount of does and bucks on a yearly basis. Three years ago I had a small 6 point and a 4 point that were locked up sparring good and grunted them in 4 separate times. I let the 4 point have it because it was bigger, I was tired of looking at him and honestly I was pretty hungry. The next morning same stand I killed a real good 7 point buck that came to the grunt call first thing at 7 oclock. After that I took three more does that year, and I still see plenty of deer where I hunt. If I feel froggy im gonna pull the trigger, Nuff said. IMO Its everybody's right to do as they please as long as they do so within the rules.
Good luck everyone Sept. 8th....Cant wait

Im Going To Make My Comment Short Do To The Fact Im About To Go To Bed So I'll Be Ready to shoot Doves Bright And Early lol. I Love Deer Hunting, And yes I Love Big Bucks And Will Pass Little Bucks Durning Bow Season. The Only Reason Deer Are Over Populated Are Because They Live In Places That Cant Be Hunted. I Wish I Was Able To Tag Out On Deer Every Year, But I Hunt Gameland Where The Compition IS Fierce For One Deer. 5 Hunters Per Every one Deer. I Love Shooting Does, Just As Good As Bucks, But Im Happy To Just Be Hunting. I Average 4 To 5 Deer A Season, on gameland Thats Pretty good. There Is No Over Population Of Deer On Any Publicland In N.C Some Are Better Then Others. There Is No ?? That The Buck To Doe #s Are Way Unblanced. Way More Does Then Bucks, But Over The Past 2 Year Hunters on Most Gamelands Have Done A Very Good Job On Shooting More Does. Less Does = Better Deer Heards And A Much Better Rut. Thanks!! Thats All. Good Luck Hunting!!

    Like They Said............
Like ChadB and GT as well as a few others said. Deer numbers in NC are good. I think more than you think. Duke Forest....even after an attempt to control the population still stands a 80 deer per square mile....kind of an exception to the rule. Wake Forest has recently spoke about urban deer populations and wanting to join the Urban bow hunting.
Trophy deer in NC? There are deer killed here every year that rival the deer of Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois.
Some areas are over populated and some under because of lack of hunting or over hunting. I can pull up my record for harvest on the NCWRC site and on average.....I shoot 11 deer a year, with last year being the lowest ever 7! 90% of the harvest were doe, which I prefer because I process each and everyone my self and live off that meat. If it's December 31st and I have a tag left and a cow horn walks out.....guess who's going in the cooler.
Everyone loves a trophy....I have a couple but, for me....you can't eat horns so shoot does by preferred choice. A trophy is in the eyes of the hunter as GT, many times has said and I agree. If you want a trophy....signing a piece of paper won't get it for you but, staying in the tree a little longer or buying a ticket to Iowa might!

    No paper signing from me!

Man its been awhile since I posted anything but I have to put my 2 cents in on this one. Yea Im in the same tree (can't say boat its deer hunting..lol) as GT and Viper and most on this one. It is in the eyes of the hunter if he or she wants to shoot the deer that comes out. I mainly hunt for meat also and kill my fair share of does a year. I now have a 1 buck to 3 doe ratio on my 115 acres that I hunt. Before it was terrible like 1 buck for every 6 does or more. I had to learn it all myself, as I had no one to show or teach me anything about hunting or fishing. For the ones that mentioned their kids, take them every chance you get, you will not regret it and they will think you for it in the long run. Teach them the basics and ethics of hunting then let them decide what they want to shoot. To me a deer is a deer, yea sure I would love to kill a monster some day but will it happen probabley not. But I sit in the stand watching my surroundings and hoping for the big one, but if I see some big fat pretty does come out then well thats good enough for me and one is going on the meat wagon to the butcher shed. If you don't have the genes in your area for big wide monster deer then your not going to get them. I'm 29 and I used to watch the hunting shows all the time but the ones now, most of them but not all, are about as fake as fake can get. North Carolina produces some pretty bucks every year. I try and manage on my property too but when you watch the same bucks for 4 to 5 years and they never get much bigger then what they are at 2 and 1/2 to 3 years old then well thats the gene pool. I plant food plots and keep the feeders full year round and well it is what it is. I say leave it be and let the hunter choose what he or she wants to harvest. There is a lot more to say but enough is enough for now. GT you can't leave us, this site would be dead, I kinda like your catfishing videos too, keep making them. Also like your comments on most things, some are funny and others are blunt and get right to the point.

    Did anybody understand the petition?
If I'm reading the posts here, people want the ability to kill unlimited deer (see WRC proposals H19 and H20), will kill does but like to kill bucks. Well, guys, those three things usually don't happen at the same time. The petition, imho, makes a helluva lotta sense because it is about the only chance I see of accomplishing each of these three things at the same time. Why? Well, if buck limits are 1 in the central and west and the overall bag limit remains six deer, that means you can kill 5 does. If the buck limit is 2 in the east sted of 4, that means you still have the right to kill 4 does. And what does that do? Reduces pressure on bucks, kllls more does (which is the ONLY way to control deer populations), and stockpiles bucks somewhat. and we get bigger-racked bucks while nobody's telling you that you can't kill six deer (same as always). Some people talked about wamting to put venison in the freezer. Well, there you go. Rather eat doe than buck venison anytime.
Maybe you don't know that farmers RIGHT NOW are getting depredation permits, gut shooting deer at night in their fields with .22-cal rifles so the deer will run off and the farmers won't have to get their carcasses out of the fiels. On top of that, Wildlife is giving depredation permits for BLACK BEARS and farmers are shooting bears with small caliber rifles. The Wildlife's proposals, coming up for public comment this month, will make THESE TWO THINGS EASIER TO DO -- WHICH IS WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. If farmers want to cut down on crop deprivation by deer and bear, open up an early archery season or at least have a rule that farmers have to make an effort to contact Hunters for the Hungry, local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc., when they're gonna kill a field full of deer or shoot bears. There's no requirement to use wild game meat shot at night for 'crop deprivation' in these proposals. So if you like the idea of wild game rottin' in fields or off in swamps with a .22 in the belly, please don't attend the public hearings coming up this month.

Cast&Blast...How have you been doing? Good I hope. I have seen this nonsense first hand already that you speak of and what is sad is a Great older friend of mine got into this certain Club 2 years in a row at $1100 a Year...Could only shoot Bucks 15 inches wide or 8 points AND...If the members didn't Kill at least 2 Does during the season they had to pay $150 Each...So another $300 if they didn't shoot at least 2 Does...Well this particular lease had a reputation for good deer so my friend was patient and the first year he didn't shoot a Buck but did take a few Does...The following year, he Didn't shoot a thing!!! so he had $2500 in a few does not counting the work involved and all the Corn he bought among other things...WELL....During the summer leading up to the next season...He was moving a stand with his son 1 afternoon and here comes some guys form several Counties away that The farmer had Hired to kill the deer at night and Kill them they Did!! Any size, Shape or form and left them lay like you said...What got me was...If it's all legal then why didn't the farmer Call the members of the Club who's Money he already had and give them the option of taking some Deer...To EAT!!!!!!!....People are just Money Hungry and Stupid to say the least...I myself have heard countless farmers...even good friends of mine I get corn from ...Complain and Moan about how they deer are eating up all their profit and I'm standing there face to face with them telling them I will sign anything saying that They will Not be responsible whatsoever if I was granted permission to hunt...Even Bow Hunt and then the conversation turns to..Well....My grandson and His pals are suppose to hunt more this year Blah Blah and start making excuses...I'm telling them face to face that I'm willing to help to get some Deer meat and they (The Farmers) continue hoping that the deer problem goes away...It's not going too!!! It takes a rare Breed to hunt like I do and a few others I know of and what I mean by that is...Actually Hunt!!! I have another friend that considers himself a Deer Hunter among other things and he has all the Best equipment ETC and only went Twice last year and he has access to some prime land. I asked him why haven't you been hunting and he said...I know where they are when I want 1!!....I don't see me ever paying to kill a deer, I would just stop I believe.

I hear what you're saying but what they need to do in addition is allow still hunters to bait those bear. The bear hunters have it locked up with dog hunting which is great but, bear are now in small pockets of land that the bear hunters can't run and they are going unchecked. I as a still hunter only am ready to check them!

Good to hear from you and thanks for the input!
