I'm looking to start duck hunting and was looking for some advice to get started. I have friends that duck hunt that have access to land, boats, dogs and what not but I was looking at what I need to get started.

I'm looking at getting a new shotgun. Right now I have a 20 gauge 870 I've used for bird hunting, but I'm looking at getting a 12 gauge. I was looking at the Browning BPS. I shot my friends, and it felt and shot great. I loved the fact that the shell ejected from the bottom of the gun. Any thoughts on this gun?

Also I'm looking at a good pair of waders. What grain of Thinsulate should I buy? Also what other supplies will I need? I have a lab pup I plan on training in the future. He's around 7 months right now, so I'm just waiting from him to mature before I start force fetching him. Any other tips would be great!

    duck huntin
hey bo. ive duck hunted pretty much all my life. as far as what you NEED, a shotgun, good pair of waders an good camo jacket are at the top of the list in my opinion.i have a pair of 1200 gram and 800 gram waders but use the 800 gram 95% of the time. reckon it just depends on when your gonna be huntin the most and how you do with cold weather.i usually take off work the whole month of january. if you aint ever done much duck huntin then i wouldnt suggest any calls or doin any callin right away. that might hurt ya more than it would help. haha. if that 870 you got was a 12 gauge id say stick with it but then again a 20 gauge will knock dust on em too. you caint go wrong with a 870. let me know where your gonna be huntin (swamps, lake, rivers, etc.) an what kinda huntin your gonna be doin (pass shootin, tryin to decoy ducks, from a blind or boat,) an ill try to help ya more. an as far as your ol pup goes, id get started on em before to long. i know from exprience its awholeee lot easy trainin em when there young than it is when there older. i had a pup once that was huntin a little past 7 months. like i said let me know some more on what your plannin to do. id love to help anyway i can. have a good one.

Well put ncdc. I aint no pro when it comes to duck hunting but if your hunting swamps, waders are a must and if your hunting lakes, a dog is a must (or a fishing pole with bait with lots of treble hooks LOL)

My best advise to you is get you some shellz for your 20 gauge (4 shot works fine for me imo) and go with some of your friends you speak of who have been duck hunting before and let them teach you more. It will save you a lot of time and heartache.

Good luck buddy and feel free to ask more questions on here b/c theres a lot of fine sportsman on this site who have plenty more experience than me who might can help you out.

limbhanger i bout fell out the chair when i read that, fishin pole wit a treble hook. haha. i been in some swamps that i sure did wish i had one.

but yea cncimino, limbhangers gotta point. get with your boys an see how you like it before you go to buyin too much. cause trust me, you'll get ate up with it an before you kno it everytime you turn around your buyin duck calls an lookin at other mess. if i were you id stick with my 870, get some steel shot an pattern your gun an buy you a good pair of waders til you get broke in good for the time bein. If its a older 870 like the one i have an will only shoot a 2 3/4 shell, getcha some kent #2s or #4s. they work great in mine.

I would try it few times to make sure I like it before ya go overboard buyin stuff cause duck huntin can get expensive quick now as far as guns would upgrade to a 12 guage and as far as shot I shoot number 2 or bigger an most of the time T shot its just me personal preference and what works best for me..........and if ya dont have a dog the idea of using a treble hook is a great one ive done it many times to retrieve ducks I'll just carry a rod that can be broke down and carry it in a pack
