remington 243 or 270 is good for the next level up.you can get them with a synthetic stock so they won't be so heavy.

A 6mm is what mine used at that age. I hear that a 260 is a good gun for young kids.

I got My daughter has a 223 Single Shot Youth...It's a Flat shooting Gun!!! I was surprised about how loud that little thing is...A 260 is a great caliber also.

Just my two cent. Have you considered a .257 Roberts. They are a very good versatile round. Low recoil and has better knock down than a .223 or .243. They have also been around for a long time. If I was interested in going with a quarter bore that's the round I would go with. It's unique and would be a very cool gun to anybodies collection. And for a 7 year old it would make them the coolest kid in town.

    ruger
ruger makes a compact rifle that has a 1' shorter buttstock and barrel is only is 16.5' long. I have a ruger compact 7mm-08 and love it, they also have them in .243 and .308. It is absolutely one of my favorites in the gun safe.

Tom yea everybody seems to forget that round. I would love to get my hands on a .257 Roberts.

And that 7mm-08 is a cool little round based on a .308 like has already been said. Supposed to shoot nice and flat lower recoil comparable to a .260.

But for me and my odd ball taste I would favor the .257 Roberts
