Let me say..... This rain SUCKS! Opening day of Black Powder tomorrow and the forecast is rain. I have a question for you all. What do you guys do to keep your muzzle loader dry in moist climates? I have in the past missed some nice ones because of a cap or primer firing and not igniting the black powder. Thanks in advance.

what kinda smoke pole d you have?
i hunt with my blackpowder all the time here. if its one of the new TC's or one that shoots a 209 primer i have never had one missfire. when you get into the percussion caps like #10s or #11s its a tricky business in the rain. i made a wrap out of some rubber a few years back that i would wrap around the bolt and just cut a slit in it so you could cock it. that did the trick in the rain. biggest thing is just dont hold your barrel towards the sky in the rain. good luck and dont be to dissapointed in the rain. Something about a cold october rain really gets the bucks up and moving. good luck and hope you get a monster!

    Rifle
I am using a Knight rifle. It uses the 209 primer. I still have had it not ignite my powder pellets when raining on occasion. I thought about maybe putting some tape over the end of the barrel on time to keep moisture out of the barrel. I will be there rain or shine. Good luck to you also!

Like Mac,Said...I have never had a 209 misfire Yet myself but Powder and dampness don't go good together. I Love hunting in a light Rain because I was taught too LOL...My Grandpa used to tell me...'Boy, You know how a Dog smells 3 times worse when it's wet?' 'Well its the same way with a Deer...That Ole Buck can smell her easier in the Rain'...LOL I Have always told myself that if it was a Light Rain then I should go because Grand-Pa would have. But I think I'm gonna work tomorrow Morning till 11 because we are suppose to get a Hard rain about 6 AM and rain till Noon...I'll try my Luck tomorrow afternoon I guess. I have heard of people placing a Balloon or a finger tip out of a latex glove over the end of the barrel and not have it affect the shot...I've never had to do that myself....Good Luck...I'll be looking for your Post HB

I have placed a balloon over the end of the barrel; cut the end of a sandwich bag open and slid it over the hammer and cap area and taped it in place. never had a problem. the loose bag allows you to cock the hammer. I always put the charge in before I left the house. DO NOT PLACE A CAP ON THE GUN UNTIL YOU ARE AT YOUR DESTINATION.

    cva...
i had an optima back in the day and it was the stainless barrel. thats gun sucked , thats all i can say about it. i have a tc omega and i have never had a problem with it. my pops bougt a cva accura v2 and that thing is a tack driver. best advice is clean it after every hunt... and run a patch or two through it after every 4 shots max. good luck and hate that happened to ya. what kinda powder were you using?

    209 rage problem
Rage100 if u were shooting pyrodex pellets make sure u have the right end facing the 209 primer. The darker black end goes in towArd the primer cause that is the end designed to ignite.

I never had any issues with 209 primers going off but Ive had problems with wet powder (pellets) enough times that I acctually quit muzzle loading all together sold my gun. I know its extreme but 3bucks still walking do to gun issues. Any way that was 3 years ago and Im over it.Next year will buy muzzleloader bbl for my t.c. prohunter. Any body swapped bbls. on an encore ??or p.h. yet got in put?? Guys good luck to all of you jager... ps keep your powder dry

    cover it up
I'm with Charlie: Just keep the cap/nipple covered until it's time for the shot.

I don't worry with the end of the barrel once the gun is loaded: I don't think (and never had a problem with) water can get past the bullet/wad.

I haven't converted to the bigger caps, but I've never had problem with just putting some plastic over the cap and lowering the hammer to keep it in place.
