The hunter in this photo is 8 year old George Whitley hunting just outside of Manning, SC in Clarendon county. George’s deer was taken on a morning hunt on October 8, 2011. This was Georges first deer ever taken, but had been trying to get a deer within the 75 yard range his dad had limited him to ever since last season. His father (in the picture) is Paul Whitley, a SSG in the United States Army, stationed in Georgia but home on pass for the hunt. The deer was an 8 point buck taken at 72 yards with a .243 h&r single shot. George spotted the deer before his father saw it at approximately 720 in the morning. George was able to get on the deer with a well placed shot before it could cross the small food plot into a thickly wooded area. His dad is having a European Scull mount done for the boy by Matt Taylor of Woods & Water Taxidermy in Manning. Having the blood of his first kill painted on his face was not George’s favorite part of this whole event but after a talk of tradition and rites of passage and then a subsequent tackle and 30 second struggle he was the initiated into the brotherhood of South Carolina Sportsmen. The photograpger is George Strickland, George the hunters Great-Grandfather.
