  • Dove Season Still Going Strong

Three weeks into the 2011 dove season, the numbers of resident birds have dwindled, but so have the numbers of dove hunters in the field each day. Many outdoorsmen hunt doves over Labor Day weekend, then switch to deer hunting mode.

This is both a blessing and a curse to wingshooters who keep to the fields; it leaves more birds for them, but it makes dove shoots tough because there are often huge holes for dove to fly through without even drawing a shot.

Still, you can increase your odds of downing your limit of doves. Two weeks are still left in the early season, and you can aid your chances with a Mojo dove decoy or two. Also, don't underestimate the magic of camouflage. Too many hunters dress for comfort in the dove field, leaving their arms and faces exposed. This stands out to the birds, and steers them away, making your shots longer and tougher.

There's nothing like kicking back to watch college football with a plate full of bacon-wrapped dove breasts.
