Was wanting some input on if you guys used any type of calls early season to keep deer around until shooting hours in the morning or to pull them in before dark in the evenings?

    Grunt
I NEVER hunt without my Grunt Call and use it about every 15/20 minutes the whole season...Just 3 soft Grunts and 2 of my biggest deer i would bet a Thousand dollars that i killed them because of a grunt. I have aold Primos Grunt Inhale/exhale with the Wood barrel and No tube...Has a Compass and Bleat button also...Can't remember the name though...Hardwood Grunter maybe?...Once again...I never hunt without my grunt...Hey... They might be a song there somewhere LOL.

    Closed Lips Call
In early season I use the closed lip call. The quieter I can be the better. I let the crickets and frogs do all the calling in early season. The only calling I do is call friends after the shot....lol! I will grunt after bow season and even rattle a little. The only success I've had with a grunt call is it works great on getting does to change direction!

    Calling in the Early Season
I typically do not use calls that much during the early season but if I do it is usually the Lil Can by Primos. It sounds like a young doe. It is supposed to be good for the early season though. If I use a grunt call it is usually light calling and not very aggressive.

    Rarely use it
Gotta agree with Viper and DCB here. I rarely use my call. The reason for this is because in early season, the deer are patterned, and if you've done your homework (scouting/solunar tables), you'll know where they'll be. Therefore I've never had a reason to use my call, I just sit and wait patiently.

And personally, I've never had much success with a call (maybe because I hunt public lands). Only time I'll really use it is if I'm trying to turn a doe around, which was already mentioned.

My hunting buddy uses his all the time and I've got to say, I see way more deer than he does! Granted, could be user error lol. But still, I don't really use them.

    early am gruntin
Yeah, for me, I learned the hard way that too early was a big mistake. It was about 15 min before shootn light, all was quiet, settled in for the mornin, got this bright idea to let off a few soft grunts, little did I know the sap was about 50yds down the ridge, did'nt take long to peg me.....if you listen you can still hear him blowin.lololol Its a crap shoot, conditions got be right. During the ml season a few years back I sprayed my boot bottom with estrus doe-p then about every 30ft or so I would spray some on a bush til I reached my stand. bout the time I sat down, in the black pitch of darkness, I heard this high pitched weez, scared the crap out of me, thot i had a rabid coon comin up the tree, heard it again underneath my stand, I said, literally , 'what the @#%$' by the time I got a light on the ground I couldnt see anything. after i regained my comosure, it occured to me it was a buck sniffin the doe-p and doing the lip curl thing. Like I said, gotta catch it just right. I try to remind myself to expect the unexpected because it will happen.lol

    Gruntin
LOL @ 1hunternnc...I never Grunt until I can look down and tell the difference between a maple leaf and a oak leaf...Just like I never Call to a Gobbler until I can do the same..No matter how loud mouth he is LOL...but Deer Grunt all the time and just last week on my New Trail Cam that has sound..I had it on Video and there was a doe and you could hear her grunt 4 times while she looked 1 direction and then 2 spotted fawns came running up to her and she didn't grunt anymore...They do it all the Time, it is their way of communicating. 2 things I believe in 110% when it comes to Deer hunting is a Grunt Call and Rubber Boots...I have Proof that both have made me successful.

    Haha yall make me laugh.

1hunternc, I actually had a similar encounter the morning I got my 8 pointer last year, except no doe urine/calling was involved. It was pitch black and I was alone in this area I know well. I turned off my light over 20 yards from my tree (easy to spot, because its the one next to the half a tree in the skyline!). Well, I got within 5 yards of my tree and I smelled this just rank smell. Little did I know, I was less than 15 feet from a huge buck. I walked all the way up to my tree, and the sound of my rifle being set against the tree tipped him off. By this point he couldn't have been but 8 feet from me judging by where the sound came from as well as being so close I could feel the wind as he ran past me. That was literally the loudest blow I've ever heard in my life, bout made me jump out of my boots. So yes, ALWAYS expect the unexpected. I just thank the good Lord that didn't ruin my morning, as he blessed me just two hours later at 723 am.

Did I mention 15 days and a wake up!!!!?

    Misadventures
LMAO, Guys, I could right a Book on my Mis-haps from hunting from being caught with my pants down deer hunting to calling a Gobbler 300 yards across a field to 20 yards only to find out I didn't load my Gun to walking in 1 evening and a Nice buck stood up in front of me and in all the excitement...I managed to shove a Whole Roll of Butter-Rum Life-savers into the Reciever of my Shotgun thinking I had grabbed a shell....I bet that buck is Dead...Not from another Hunter but from laughing as he ran off...I should look around in that area for his remains LOL...He was a Gooddun....This is all between you and me guys OK? LOL

Oh man GT! Lifesavers! At least you're a good sport about it and can laugh about it! Life's too short to not be able to laugh at yourself! I bet we could start a post on hunting mishaps and create one heck of a story book!

Love the five simple rules of hunting 1hunternc! So true and thanks for sharing! I'd say 'Do your homework' is the precursor to the five rules of hunting.

    Confidence
Fear probably is the greatest deterrent in life that keeps up from moving out of our confront zone and experiencing newer better things. Fulfilling our dreams is our god given destiny. You know I only comment on this because people are scared to make a grunt sound because they are not confident. I tell you I have called deer in without any calls. Also I am sure GT can tell you he has called in turkey without any mouth calls. So please don’t be afraid to try something new. This goes from calling to shooting long distance. Good Luck

I'm sure others out there are just as interested as I am about calling with their mouth. Do you have any online references you'd recommend - tips/techniques/videos/etc? I know the ultimate goal is to sound like a deer but there's got to be some sort of technique to it.
