  • 44-pounder smoker wins James Island King Tourney

The James Island Yacht Club hosted its annual king mackerel tournament on Saturday, June 25, and they had thirty-one boats competing.

Eren Bracewell and Capt. Jack Bracewell brought two lady-angler kings to the scales. They were both caught in the shipping channel late in the day. A 31-pounder was caught about 1 p.m. and they rigged back up with a ribbonfish on a downrigger and the winning king, a huge 43.95-pounder ate it at 2:20 right after Jack said - 'The bait looks real good right here.' Smart Captain!

Jerry Tumbleston was waiting on the dock for the weigh-in scales to open at 3 p.m. because he had caught his BIG king early in the day around 10 a.m. Fishing with friend Welch Carlson they had planned on using blue runners for king bait but the sharks were not kind and thrashed their entire supply, so they improvised and caught some spanish. The 27.5-pound king hit a spanish being fished on a downrigger, and provided about a 15-minute fight.
