After Tagging out here in NC, The season was only a week old in my home state of W Va.(Goes out the 21st) So off I go Friday around noon heading 'Home'. I arrive and start trying to locate my Ol'Turkey Thug Posse but as you might have guessed....Weekends in West V are spent Drinking and winding down from a hard weeks work, Usually in a Coal Mines or Logging. I hang around the horse-shoe pit and freshen my game up till around 6:30,,,,Still NO Takers for a morning hunt so I head up the holler to try and Roost a bird....I stand on a Rock Cliff over looking the holler and do my best 'Who Cooks for you, Who Cooks for you Alllllll' Owl Call and sure enough 2 or 3 Gobblers sound off below me....'Jackpot!!!' I know I have my work cut out for me at the Gobblers location but these are my stomping grounds and I am pumped...I head to Dennys to hit the buffet and then it's time to sleep....I Thought... Did I mention that they Party in West V on the weekends? Well it's around 10:30 and at this point I'm thinking that Hank Jr and ALL his Rowdy Friends are in the Bed with me as loud as that music is, I get up and while 15 people are telling me how to kill a Gobbler while spitting beer on me, I make it to my Truck and tell them I'll be back (Didn't say when LOL) I park my Truck at the mouth of the holler and Go to sleep in the front seat....Short time later my cell phone is Gobbling (Yes it Gobbles lol) telling me it's 5 AM. I grab my stuff and head to a familiar spot on the 'Hill'...The 'Hill' is my family Grave-Yard and believe it or not, We still dig our own Family Graves BY HAND and I actually hauled my Mother up on the 'Hill' with my own truck because the funeral homes Jeep wagoneer got stuck in 2001....anyway, I'm sitting on a Cross-Tie Step going up toward the Grave-Yard 10 yards from my Mothers grave and 15 yards from my Grand-pas Grave among other Family (Some have just Flat Rock Head stones that I don't know) waiting on pink light. 150 yards below me Gobble obble obble...I grab my stuff and slide down the 'Hill' on my Butt and 'They' Gobble again...As I'm getting set-up, I hear 1 fly down and think 'OH NO' I bumped them, so I decide to tuck back in a stump and go without decoys. I do some soft yelps on my Crystal Mistress and 'They' all Gobble back so I go silent and hear comes the RAIN...I call again trying to hurry the hunt up before the Bottom Falls out and Gobble Obble Obble...You can only hunt till 1 in West V so I'm hoping I smack 1 quick before the Frog-Choker comes but for now it's just a shower.. I know my Grand-Pa is tossing and turning in his Grave at every Gobble. I sit tight, like he taught me and try to call again but now my call is wet and doesn't work so I reach for a mouth call and start purring and Clucking...I know they are near but with the rain I can't hear them walking, I rape the woods with my eyes and 20 minutes later...Here they come, just walking along looking...I pick out the first 1 I see thats got a visible Beard and BOOM!!! Victory in West V!!!. The other 2 looked bigger flying down the mountain but don't they always LOL? I carry the Gobbler back up on the 'Hill' and have a over-due Conversation with my Mother, Grand-pa,Cousins-Brian and Dennis among others in the Grave-Yard while I admire my Gobbler before heading out of the Holler. I reach the Truck and wouldn't you know it, the rain stops and the Sun Burns through the Clouds,I change clothes and decide to drive the 1 1/2 miles and take the Gobbler by my Grand-Pas Ol Home-Place and using a 55 Gallon Drum for a Tripod, I take some photos to share with you Guys. I used to shovel Coal,Stack Wood,Clean Deer, Fish ETC in this Ol, Building, all my Childhood It's over a Hundred Years old....Alot of Memories at this old Place.I stop by to show the Week-end warriors my Bird but everyone is passed-out LOL so I head to town and I stop by the 'Sky-Line' Drive-in for a couple slices of 'Coal Miners Pizza' (That's pizza with a Corn-Bread Crust with Pinto beans and Sliced fried Taters among other things) YUM YUM!!!! And then I hit the asphalt to head back to NC...Had to work today. BTW Seen 5 Big Strutters in Fancy Gap Virginia, Anybody have ties up there? LOL.... Hope you Guys had a Great Season

    Congrats
Congratulations man on a fantastic season GT. What a great story to come back to NC and tell. I know it felt good to go back home where you probably learned most of what you know about the outdoors. Then on top of that, bust a big ol' longbeard!! I myself had to eat one turkey tag sandwich but at least I did get one this year. I got to take my wife, father, and father-in-law hunting quiet a bit so I really enjoyed that. Anyway, great ending to the season!!

    Great Hunt!
Gt....I am known for being a solitary hunter and the hunt you just described sounded like heaven. There is nothing like being in the woods with just you, God and the creatures he made. Makes you feel like you are part of it and belong there. It's funny how people take for grantide, something special in their own back yard.

Sounds like you had a very fitting end to another great season. Thanks for all the knowledge you've shared with me this year.....hey brother's forever!

    Blessed
GT, You are truely blessed. My father raised me duck hunting down east and in Currituck County, I am still blessed with his company from time to time and those are the best hunts no matter what the shooting was like. You just spent a day hunting with your grand dad (I promise he was there) and nothing could be better. I am glad you got one, but more so I'm glad you reflected on who got you there. Congrats and good luck with the catfishing.

    Thanks Guys
Hey Thanks Guys, Wow 215 Views and only 4 comments? That's OK...You guys Commenting says alot about the kind of persons you are. Yeah I had a Great season and regardless of what people think, it wasn't easy...I lost 12-lbs LOL but I'll gain that back waiting on a Catfish clicker while eating junk food LOL. Thanks again to Creek07 for the invite to his hunt where I took a Super Gobbler opening day....Man that was a load off my back LOL and then calling Viper his Very first Gobbler in the same day.....Priceless. My other success came on Public Land that anyone can hunt...My theory on Public land Birds is this...'Walk further because other hunters wont, Kill the Birds that other Hunters don't' It's been a tough HOT season and trust me I screwed up several times because I let the Number 1 rule in Turkey hunting slip from my mind 'Patience' Thanks to all you guys that commented and I hope someday to share a tree with each of you in the Turkey woods..............God Bless and again Thanks for the kind words....There is no place like home and there nothing like Hunting there. Good Luck to all you guys on your future Hunts.

    Great story.
Hey GT!! Great story it must be great to be able to have such a history at a place like that and still have the blessing to go back and visit there and share the same gifts and hobbies as your family has passed down to you. I hope to get up to PA one of these years and hunt out of my great Grandpas old cabin if there is anything left of it. My Father made several trips out there with him when he was still in school. I just think it would be a cool experience to relive history in that way. Awesome Story once again GT and congrats on a great season!

Hey Thanks AvidArcher, Can't believe you didn't get out 1 time.Yeah i had a great Turkey season and The land in West V is land that anyboby can hunt, It's owned by the New River Coal Co. even the land our grave-yard is on...Not sure why but it's just that way LOL. We keep our own Grave-yard up as far as the road, mowing, cleaning etc. Its a whole different world back home and no where near the crap you usually hear about West V. I told a ol'Friend of mine on facebook where i killed my Gobbler at and he took 1 up there last tuesday morning as well (18lbs 1 inch spurs and 8 inch beard).Going back after some SmallMouths before long, Like you said, Theres NOTHING like hunting at HOME... Thanks again and next time you go to S&S to hang out, Give me a holler and i'll ride over if i can...i need to get a couple arrows fletched anyway.....Take Care

    G.T,

I have not checked in for some time and read any of the latest from all you guys and gals. I missed the turkey this year but maybe next year. I found your story wrote very well and I felt like I was there. I know it had to be a very good hunt and one you will never forget. I thought so much of the story I read it to my wife. She enjoyed it and said it had to be special to hunt at the home grounds and speak with passed love ones. It sounds like you grew up in a enviroment that was family and hard work. I too grew up that way and would never want it any other way. It made me a better person today. I am glad you had a great season! You surely worked hard for it. And the hard work pays off. I am trying to get prepared for the deer season and score a big one. Hope to be chatting with everyone this fall and winter. Take care, and again, GREAT STORY!

Hey Huntinbucks, Buddy I was wondering about you. Man, That comment about brought a tear to my eye...Thanks alot...Yeah I could Write a Book about my Childhood in West V. and your right, It was rough...When I found out a bag of Taters was $8, It made me wonder how poor we was, The way we had to work in the Garden all the time LOL. It's a different life back home and YES, Turkey season was Great...I hate you didn't get out much...Season was Hot but so were the birds for the most part. I went back to West V later in the season and came close but some stray dogs busted my set-up but thats OK...I have never had a bad day Turkey hunting LOL....Look forward to chatting with you again as well...Oh yeah...I bought me 1 of those millenium climbers we talked about...It sits AWESOME but kinda awkward setting up so...You guessed it...It's For Sale LOL...Take Care and Thanks again for the comment.
