  • Bass Bite on Lake Hartwell

With the water level on Lake Hartwell above full pool, there is plenty of grass in the coves and off the points, and the bass are smashing sub-surface and surface baits.

Back in the pockets of the coves, the bass are hitting floating worms and frogs. For the floating or trick worms the colors vary from green pumpkin, yellow or lime green. If you are throwing frogs, they are hitting white Horny Toads. Throw back in the grass, and the strike will usually come right after you start working the bait.

Moving out to the points, the bass are chasing the bait and trying to pin them against the bank. They are not coming up long, but long enough to spot where they are feeding. When the bass go back down, you can “call them up” by throwing a white Super Fluke. Work the bait especially hard on the down-wind side of the points for a strike.

If the bass stay down, try throwing hard-body swim baits like a Lucky Craft #105 LL Pointer Smasher or Sebile #95 Magic Swimmer in shad colors. While working the points, also try throwing a a Ľ-ounce Texas rig with a finesse or trick worm in any green pumpkin color or a 4-inch white or pearl swimbait. If the fish move off the points, try working the shallow sloping banks for a strike.

In you want to know how the pros catch them, the Lady Bass Anglers Association will have a tournament out of Portman Shoals Marina on May 5 & 6 with the weigh-in at 3 pm. On May 7, the LBAA will hold the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Charity Team Open Bass Tournament with a guaranteed $1000 first prize and $500 big bass. For more information about these tournaments contact Cheryl Bowden at 214-738-7518 or Secret York at 270-741-9048.

    full pull
With the lake at full pool , sounds like anglers can expect a full pull from the fish!!

Good Luck to all the Lady Anglers who fish that tournament.
