Duck Hunters....what kind of duck is this. I have two huge pecan trees in my back yard. I have seen squirrels, snakes, birds of all kinds in these trees before but, never have I seen a duck in them. This morning there were 2 ducks. They are the size of a Mallard but have a crest like wood duck. They seemed too big to be wood ducks but, they were walking the branches like a squirrel with ease. They seemed to be eating new shoots from the branches.

Viper, That's a drake woodie in the photo. I can identify his markings. Nice photo of this striking bird. This is the time of year when they are searching trees for suitable nest cavities and you might see them in an awkward place around now more so than other times. The hen will be all brown.

Thanks Jeff. I looked up the wood duck and thought it had the same markings but the body seemed too big. I guess I'm use to seeing them in the water cruising up the creeks when I'm deer hunting! First time seeing one in a tree. It was a male female pair!
