While the General Assembly is adjourned for the holiday season, the democratic caucus held their annual planning session for 2011 calendar year. Meeting at the South Carolina Waterfowl Association facilities in Rimini offered a chance for fellowship beyond the statehouse, and in the duck blind. Even though it was 18 degrees on Tuesday morning, these state legislators rallied to break the ice where necessary in order to shoot their limit of migratory waterfowl. Wood ducks were the number one duck in the bag and SCWA's continued efforts to monitor wood duck boxes throughout the state must garner at least a share of the praise for their sustainable populations. Mallards, black ducks, ringnecks and hooded mergansers rounded out the bag on a day when the ducks circled more than usual because so much of the area was frozen over. The ducks were cleaned and taken home by the legislators to be shared with their families, along with their stories of hunting ducks in icy conditions.
