The Savannah River Site near Aiken, S.C. conducts one of the safest deer hunts anywhere, and the December 1, 2010 hunt was no exception. Roughly 70 standers were deployed near Par Pond on the SRS while roughly 60 packs of deer dogs were turned loose in strategic areas. A cold and howling wind kept things interesting but the end result was 61 deer harvested and 7 wild hogs, in a tradition known as 'Deer Control Activities.' Hunters from Georgia, NC, SC and even Louisiana gathered for the fellowship of the hunt and the chance to take a big buck from the herd at SRS. Coyotes may be influencing deer herd numbers in SC, and a study is underway at SRS right now to try and determine their impact.
