  • SRS 12/1 hunt a success

The Savannah River Site conducts one of the safest deer hunts anywhere, and the December 1, 2010 hunt was no exception. Roughly 70 standers were deployed near Par Pond on the SRS while roughly 60 packs of deer dogs were turned loose in strategic areas. A cold and howling wind kept things interesting but the end result was 61 deer harvested and 7 wild hogs, in a tradition known as 'Deer Control Activities.' Hunters from Georgia, NC, SC and even Louisiana gathered for the fellowship of the hunt and the chance to take a big buck from the herd at SRS. Coyotes may be influencing deer herd numbers in SC, and a study is underway at SRS right now to try and determine their impact.

Looks like a good hunt. Were any coyotes seen during the hunt?

SRS encourages hunters to harvest coyotes, but they are almost too smart for that. My hunting buddy Julian Clark saw a coyote during the deer drive but did not shoot citing safety concerns over another hunter on down the road. No coyotes were killed on the 12/1 hunt.
